The Rise of Sustainable Fashion

As conscious consumerism continues to gain momentum, sustainable fashion has become a prominent trend in the industry. With a focus on sustainability and ethics, individuals are looking for alternatives to fast fashion that align with their values. One such alternative is sustainable handbags, which have emerged as a stylish and ethical option for fashion-forward individuals. These bags not only make a fashion statement but also promote positive social and environmental impact.

What makes a handbag sustainable?

We look for a few things when deciding if a brand should be listed on Sustainably Chic. The top two things are manufacturing and materials. Are the bags created ethically in safe working conditions, and are they made from materials that are kind to the planet? Transparency is essential to us, and if we cannot learn how their handbags are made, we aren’t confident sharing them with you. As mentioned above, we look for eco-friendly materials like plant-based vegan leathers, natural fibers, and veggie-tanned leather. If you are interested in learning more about sustainable fabrics, please check out these posts here.

We also want to list brands that make a quality product at an accessible price point. The point of buying a sustainable product is for it to last you many years and avoid having to replace it. We also understand that sustainable fashion brands are more expensive than conventional brands. Therefore, we search for brands whose price points are more manageable than others because you don’t have to spend $500 on a beautiful, quality handbag!

Of course, no brand is ever perfectly sustainable, but we believe these brands are genuinely working to make the fashion industry fairer for workers and plant-friendly.

The Environmental Impact of Traditional Handbags

Traditional handbags often contribute to the fashion industry's negative environmental impact. These bags are typically made from materials like PVC and polyurethane, which are derived from fossil fuels and have a high carbon footprint. The production process for traditional handbags also involves high water usage and the release of harmful chemicals into the environment. Furthermore, the fast fashion model encourages the overconsumption and disposal of handbags, leading to significant waste generation.

Benefits of Purchasing a Sustainable Handbag

There are several benefits to choosing a sustainable handbag over their traditional counterparts. Firstly, sustainable handbags are made from eco-friendly materials that have a lower environmental impact. Vegan leather, for example, is produced without the need for animal hides and is sometimes made from natural and renewable plant-based materials. Additionally, sustainable handbags are designed to be durable and long-lasting, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing waste.

Secondly, sustainable handbag brands prioritize fair trade practices and ensure that workers are paid a fair wage and work in safe conditions. By supporting ethical brands, consumers contribute to a more compassionate and equitable fashion industry.

Retrophilia Vintage Clothing

After a visit to Santa Chiara's Monumental Complex near Piazza del Gesù Nuovo and a walk through the majolica-tiled of its cloisters, head a few streets eastward to Via Mezzocannone for a vintage treat.

Via Mezzocannone is a typical uphill strada of Naples's historic center, but it is also where one can find the best selection of second-hand shops and vintage boutiques this town has to offer. Retrophilia Vintage Clothing might be the right place to go thrift shopping in Naples if you are not one for touristy spots when traveling abroad. There, you can enjoy a chat or a coffee with the many local patrons of all ages while you browse the store's outstanding selection for the vintage piece you are looking for, knowing you are bringing home a unique experience along with your unique vintage piece.

POP TWENTYONE vintage and second-hand

Via Mezzocannone, 81

Porto neighborhood

Via Tito Angelini, 13

Vomero neighborhood

The fact that Naples' historic center is the heart of its thrifting scene is quite convenient for visitors as chances are that's where they will be doing most of the exploring. Another thrift shop you can visit in the area after you are done seeing for yourself what the people of this port city have built and created since the 9th century BC is POP TWENTYONE

With its bright orange walls and the best coat selection in town, this eye-catching shop is another go-to for locals looking for high-quality vintage clothing. Stopping at POP TWENTYONE is a must for people who love vintage and second-hand designer goods, as that's what this shop specializes in, carrying high-end brands like Burberry, Max Mara, Gucci, and Fendi.

Here is an extra tip for the more type A travelers. You can check out their Instagram account to get a better idea of the kind of clothes and accessories you can find at POP TWENTYONE during your trip to Naples. This Neapolitan shop's staff regularly posts their new picks on their IG page so that you can go there with a list in mind.

Let's say you are one for a vacation off the beaten path instead and have decided to visit or stay in the residential hilltop district of Vomero in the northern part of town. In that case, you can visit the other POP TWENTYONE location after enjoying the area's famous panoramic views of the city and its gulf. If you need more of their selection even after your trip, we have good news for you! They ship to Italy as well as Europe.

Oblomova

Via S. Sebastiano, 20

San Giuseppe neighborhood

The vintage, second-hand, and artisan shop Oblomova is a sight for sore eyes tucked in one of the many must-see narrow streets in the Italian city's historic center, filled with a delightful lineup of indie local businesses.

If this is your first time in the city or you love art and history, chances are you'll be in this area already. This vintage and second-hand shop is, in fact, a short walk away from the Sansevero Chapel Museum (Museo Cappella Sansevero). This museum is the location of Giuseppe Sanmartino's Veiled Christ (1753), one of the best artworks in the city and one of the most famous sculptures in the world.

Once you have your fill of Naplotian culture, art, and history at the Sansevero Chapel Museum, you can visit Oblomova in the nearby Via S. Sebastiano to enjoy a different, more minute kind of history. In this small shop with a big personality, you can find a selection of vintage clothing and accessories, pre-loved pieces, and hand-made garments and home decor like the ex-voto from the local maker Cometa and Atelier Elsillus's homemade pottery from Lübeck, Germany. If you like florals, fun prints, and colorful, whimsical vintage clothing that catches the eye and has a comfortable fit, this indie thrift shop is the right place to go thrift shopping in Naples. The fun decor, cheerful clothing, and many regulars will make for a vivacious shopping experience in one of the city's many bustling streets.

Baule Volante

Via San Biagio dei librai, 106

Pendino neighborhood

The vintage shop Baule Volante looks exactly like what its name brings to mind, meaning "flying chest" in Italian. When you walk up Via San Biagio dei libra and into this vintage store, you'll get the feeling of having suddenly left the metropolis's hustle and stepped right into the bedroom of someone equally eccentric and well-dressed. Here, the selection of vintage clothing and accessories is idiosyncratic and carefully curated, all served with a hefty amount of dolls, plushies, figurines, and assorted trinkets of all kinds.

The location of this surrealistic shop is more than just any street. Via San Biagio dei librai is a historic street located right at the heart of the city, near the famous "Spaccanapoli," the long, narrow road that splits Naples's historic center. Its name, "dei librari" means "of book shopkeepers," and this street was and still is famous in Naples and beyond for being the location of countless bookshops and a fundamental location for Neapolitan history and culture. It is also where the city's Doll Hospital is located (Ospedale delle Bambole). A place where, for generations, dolls and toys of all kinds have been restored and fixed.

Opened in 2014 by Claudia Ascione, the vintage shop Baule Volante is the perfect thrift store to browse as part of your visit to this quaint, quintessentially Neapolitan street thanks to its nostalgic atmosphere, which perfectly channels the spit of its busty, zany neighborhood.

Chiaja Vintage

Via Chiaia 66

Chiaia neighborhood

The ideal destination for all vintage bag lovers who can't say no to a bit of sea breeze is Chiaja vintage. This shop specializes in vintage bags located in the quiet, residential seaside neighborhood of Chiaia.

Along with beautiful views of the Gulf of Naples and its beautiful villas, churches, and palazzi like the Palazzo Cellammarethis neighborhood also offers plenty of elegant boutiques, and Chiaja vintage fits right in with its selection of vintage handbags ranging from eccentric to timeless and everything in between.

If you are in the market for a vintage bag and are done gazing at the seaside around Castel dell'Ovo, the city's oldest castle, and the neighborhood's most famous landmark, check out Chiaja Vintage. The owner, Carmen Maresca, knows about every bag in the store and will help you choose the right one.

We all know that shopping vintage and second-hand can be a more sustainable way to buy the clothes we might want or need. Still, it can also be a more responsible way to bring home mementos from our vacations abroad by supporting local, independent businesses. In Naples, thrift shopping is not only an option that fits right in with a classic tour of the city's most famous landmarks but also a way to engage in a genuinely Neapolitan experience, as it's safe to say this city loves all things vintage. So, if you need new clothes and find yourself on the shore of the Gulf of Naples, you know where to go now.

10 Organic and Sustainable Underwear Brands For Ultimate Comfort (2025)

woman wearing sustainable underwear made from organic cotton

Let’s dive into a topic that’s often overlooked but incredibly important -our underwear! While we usually focus on outerwear when discussing sustainability, it’s time to give our undergarments the love they deserve. Opting for organic underwear is not only a smart choice for the planet but also a wonderful gift for your body. With breathable natural fabrics and ethical production processes, these pieces beautifully blend comfort, care, and consciousness. After all, shouldn’t what we wear closest to our skin reflect our values? Let’s embrace the idea that sustainability can be just as cozy as it is responsible (or cheeky, if you prefer! 😉).

What is sustainable underwear?

Sustainable underwear is designed with both the planet and its people in mind. Unlike conventional options that use synthetic materials and harmful production methods, these eco-friendly alternatives are made from natural fabrics like organic cotton, TENCEL™, and hemp. These materials not only conserve water but also steer clear of toxic pesticides, making them a healthier choice for the environment - and you!

Sustainable underwear is produced in ethical factories that prioritize fair wages and safe working conditions for their workers. Many brands go the extra mile by using low-waste packaging, carbon-neutral shipping methods, and maintaining transparency throughout their supply chains. With a focus on durability and comfort, sustainable underwear not only feels great but also offers a conscientious choice that supports both environmental and social well-being.

Benefits of Organic Underwear

In 2008, a study found that dogs wearing polyester experienced significant disruptions to their reproductive systems. While more research is needed on humans, this highlights potential concerns about prolonged contact with synthetic fabrics like polyester - and suggests they may not be as harmless to our bodies as we think.

Organic underwear is not just a choice; it's a way to enhance your comfort and care for the planet. They are free from toxic pesticides & dyes and harsh chemicals, making them perfect for those with sensitive skin. The breathable and hypoallergenic materials help reduce irritation while allowing for optimal airflow, so you can enjoy all-day comfort.

On an environmental note, organic farming practices are a breath of fresh air. They use significantly less water, nurture healthier soil, and contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions - it's also much healthier for the farmers. By choosing organic underwear, you’re not only taking a step towards better health for yourself but also supporting ethical labor practices, as many brands are committed to fair trade and safe working conditions. It's a simple yet impactful change you can make - one that benefits both your body and the earth.

How to Choose Sustainable Underwear

When shopping for sustainable underwear, there are a few key factors to consider. Firstly, look for certifications such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or Oeko-Tex Standard 100, which ensure that the materials used are organic and/or free from harmful substances. These certifications ensure that the product meets specific environmental and social standards.

Additionally, research the brand's sustainability practices and values. Look for brands prioritizing transparency and providing information about their supply chains and production processes. Brands committed to fair trade practices and ethical labor will often highlight these aspects on their websites or product packaging.

Luckily, we did a lot of this work for you when curating this post!

The 10 Best Natural & Non-Toxic Air Fresheners in 2025

A bottle of non-toxic air freshener in a bathroom

Humans have been trying to mask unpleasant odors in their homes for millennia. Ages ago, people used to change the scent in the air by burning incense or using spices, herbs, and floral extracts.

But the invention of modern-day, conventional air fresheners actually dates back to 1948. It suddenly became very easy to get rid of unwanted smells and freshen up our spaces. We simply needed to spray out a fine mist into the air, and we would enjoy the lingering scent for a few hours.

These days, most households still regularly use air and fabric fresheners around their homes as they are extremely convenient to have. Yes, we can open the windows and let fresh air in, but sometimes, we want to add a nice scent to our rooms and closets.

Almost all air and fabric fresheners available in stores contain harmful chemicals and toxins that are incredibly unhealthy and unsustainable. But does that mean we need to stop using air fresheners altogether? No, it doesn’t!

In this article, you will learn more about ten brands that make eco-friendly, non-toxic air and fabric fresheners that you can safely use around your family, children and pets. We also included a DIY recipe for people who prefer making their own products!

Why You Should Stay Away From Conventional Air Fresheners

Since the home fragrance industry is unregulated and there are no safety standards or ingredient transparency requirements, companies selling air and fabric fresheners fill their products with extremely dangerous chemicals. These are known to trigger allergies and asthma and may cause other health problems.

Toxins in Air Fresheners

More specifically, conventional air fresheners usually contain phthalates, which are linked to hormone disruption and male reproductive system birth defects. Synthetic musks commonly appear in air fresheners, and researchers suspect they can cause allergies and disrupt hormones.

Air fresheners are also often made with petroleum distillates, which contribute to water, air and soil pollution, and being exposed to them can lead to respiratory issues, chemical pneumonia and pulmonary damage.

Air fresheners that come in aerosol cans contain aerosol propellants that can harm the ozone layer and elevate the risk of developing cancer and chronic health issues.

These are only a few harmful ingredients contained in air and fabric fresheners. But so many others are problematic for both human health and the environment!

How to Choose a Non-Toxic Air / Fabric Freshener that is also Sustainable

When looking for a non-toxic freshener, always check the ingredient list. If you cannot find one, it may be a warning sign that you should not buy the product!

Sustainable, non-toxic air and fabric fresheners use natural ingredients such as charcoal, plant oils, and mineral- and plant-based components. Also, make sure that the product does not contain harmful ingredients like those mentioned previously.

If you are not sure of your choice, always prefer brands that received trustworthy certifications, like B Corporations. And if you can, pick air fresheners that come in recyclable or compostable packaging. Refill options are great as well!

A hand holding a glass bottle of DIY homemade natural air and fabric freshener

10. DIY Air & Fabric Freshener

All the brands mentioned in this article sell non-toxic air and fabric fresheners made with natural ingredients. But if you prefer making your own household products to clean and refresh your home instead of buying ready-made ones, this recipe is for you!

First, find an unused spray bottle in your home: the most sustainable option is to reuse one from a product that you have used up. Of course, do not forget to properly clean it so that there is no residue left.

Put one tablespoon of baking soda into a bowl, & add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to it.

I personally love making cleaning products with citrus oils, like lemon, orange or grapefruit essential oils. These always smell so good! I have also made DIY products with Ylang Ylang essential oil, which I highly recommend if you want a more exotic, floral scent.

Then, mix the oil into the baking soda with a fork or a small whisk, and use a funnel to put the mixture into the spray bottle. Finally, pour 2 cups of warm distilled water, and shake the bottle.

And there you have your homemade air and fabric freshener! You can use it to refresh the air in your home or spruce up home textiles and clothes that need a boost before washing them.

This recipe is extremely easy and cheap to make, and all the ingredients are non-toxic. Not to mention you can customize the scent and choose a different one every time you make another homemade freshener!

The Best Eco-Friendly Phone Cases to Protect Your Tech and the Planet in 2025

It is estimated that in 2023, around 1.34 billion smartphones were sold worldwide. A large part of these consumers also probably bought a phone case to protect their precious device from damage.

It's a great idea to purchase something to keep our electronics safe, but most phone cases on the market are made of plastic. It means that billions of phone cases will stay on the planet for hundreds of years, if not more.

What's worse, most of them are poorly made and don’t last long, which isn't surprising given that phone cases can cost as little as a dollar. Poor-quality phone cases will not only become waste fairly quickly, but they are also less likely to protect your device as they should.

For those reasons, we should all invest in a high-quality, sustainable phone case to make sure our phones stay intact and protected from everyday drops and bumps.

If you are looking for a new one, we have selected nine brands that sell well-made, eco-friendly phone cases.

What Makes a Phone Case Eco-Friendly?

A sustainable phone case is always very sturdy, high-quality and made to last. It usually consists of sustainable materials and should withstand more than just a few months of use.

It should also protect your device from drops and bumps because no phone case is eco-friendly if it does not prevent your phone from breaking and becoming e-waste. E-waste is very toxic when discarded inappropriately and causes many environmental issues, so we certainly do not need more of it.

If the company that sells the phone cases is climate-neutral or a certified B Corporation, even better!

What Sustainable Materials Should You Look For?

There are many eco-friendly materials that you can choose when looking for a new phone case.

You cannot go wrong with a phone case made from natural materials, like sustainably harvested wood, cork or bamboo. Those are compostable at the end of their life, so they will not stay on the planet forever.

You can also find phone cases made from bioplastic derived from plants, like straw, or ones crafted from recycled materials. For example, some parts use recycled silicone or aluminum, while the main body of the phone case is often made from recycled plastic.

Brands are now able to create phone cases made with all kinds of recycled plastic, from recycled fishing nets to recycled plastic bottles to recycled TPU. Some brands even sell cases made using old CDs, upcycled skateboards or simply discarded phone cases.

Also, prefer phone cases produced using non-toxic and sustainable glues, lining and adhesives.
