SNL's Latest Skit Shines a Light on Fast Fashion Giants Temu and Shein & We Are Here For It!

SNL Fast Fashion Ad Skit

This was too good not to share! SNL has made us laugh (slightly cringe because it’s true) once again with their ‘Xiemu’ Ad exposing the dark side of fast fashion. From exploitation of workers to hazardous products, Temu & Shein are making disposable fashion cheaper and scarier than ever.

What is Fast Fashion?

Fast fashion refers to brands that produce high volumes of clothing throughout the year. These brands now make clothes at a fraction of the price they used to, enabling consumers to update their wardrobes quickly and affordably.

But this over-consumption of cheaply-made clothes is leading to the huge growth of textile waste, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. It is raising social issues that we can no longer ignore, such as human rights violations.

The best thing we can do, as consumers, is to stop supporting this industry. We should avoid fast fashion brands and start supporting sustainable clothing brands instead (& shopping secondhand and loving what we already have!).

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A FAST FASHION BRAND?

Temu and Shein are not the only culprits. In truth, most clothing brands today are part of the fast fashion problem. A majority of fast fashion brands release new clothing collections every week and use marketing techniques to encourage consumers to buy into new trends. These companies are often vague and not entirely transparent about their suppliers and production processes. They do not provide specific information about their efforts to mitigate their environmental impact.

Additionally, they do not offer evidence that they provide their workers with decent and safe working conditions, as well as living wages.

Many fast fashion brands are greenwashing. They are disclosing misleading information to fool customers into thinking they’re an ethical and sustainable company.

Cheap prices are also a great indicator of fast fashion products and their poor quality. It’s nearly impossible to produce a $5 t-shirt, pay garment workers fairly, and have manufacturing processes that do not harm the environment.

10 Eco-Friendly Body Wash Brands for a Zero Waste Shower (2024)

The Best Eco-Friendly & Non-Toxic Body Wash

As the place that likely holds the majority of your daily use products, revamping your bathroom to be more eco-friendly can make a big difference in limiting the amount of  plastic disposables in your home. With containers, wrappers, boxes, tubes, and bottles bursting out from nearly every shelf, it can feel like an overwhelming process to know where to start. Your shower essentials are your armor for the day, and a shift to be more sustainable does not mean a sacrifice of quality. With organic ingredients and natural scents that are better for your skin, and zero-waste packaging that’s better for the environment, swapping your standard body wash for a superb sustainable alternative allows you to self-care and save the planet.

How can your shower be more sustainable?

A quick and efficient shower is just one way to keep the earth cleaner while you wash, another is to take notice of the packaging for the products you use. A single bottle of shampoo, conditioner, or body wash can come in layers of plastic with a lifespan as short as the time it takes for you to finish it. Sustainable products are built to be reused, so the more you can refill instead of rebuy the better your shower will be for the environment.  When it comes to ingredients, beauty products are typically packed with harsh chemicals and synthetics, your eco-friendly wash alternatives should always be safe and non-toxic and carry an ingredients list of familiar, organic materials.

What to Look For in a Non-Toxic, Eco-Friendly Body Wash

Though recycling your plastic body wash bottles after use is a notable effort, it’s far from a perfect solution to solve our planet’s plastic problems. An even better idea is to replace the need for single-use plastics all together. That’s why the best body wash bottle is no bottle at all. With bar soap, you get all the joys of a luxurious lather without the wasteful packaging. If bar soap doesn't feel like the right product for you, a refillable and reusable bottle is a great plastic-free alternative to disposable body wash. We all love a body wash that smells good, but manufactured fragrances can be packed with harmful parabens and sulphates. For this reason, look for smells that are organic and derived from natural essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, or rose. You can also be mindful of a brand’s ethical practices and affiliations. A company that gives back to their community, or finds a way to offset their carbon footprint, deserves our extra attention.

Eco-Friendly & Sustainable Maternity Clothing

Are you pregnant and starting to worry about fitting into your current wardrobe? I had that feeling in the beginning, too, but I decided to wait to purchase anything. I’m not particularly eager to buy clothing I will only wear for a short time. I felt there had to be a way to get use out of what I already had and work around my growing belly. I’m happy to say I bought ZERO maternity clothes for my pregnancy. I want to follow this up by saying not all of us can do this, and I don’t want anyone feeling pressure to do so, either. I did not have to go to a job where I had a specific dress code, which helped me a lot! I was able to wear whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted. Also, I’m 5’2’’, gained about 20ish pounds when pregnant, and carried Elliott a few weeks short of 40. I never felt uncomfortable or too big for what I already had, so I could work with it. We all have different bodies and comforts, so I will share with you my tips you could hopefully use for most of your pregnancy, if not all, and then list some options of where to purchase maternity clothing - both secondhand and new!

Update: I recently had my second pregnancy and gave birth to a baby girl on June 1st, 2023. I was able to go through the entire pregnancy without buying any maternity clothing. Despite gaining twice the amount of weight, I managed to work with what I had in my closet, mainly relying on flowy dresses and stretchy pants once again :D

How to Wear Regular Clothes as Maternity Clothing: Tips For Your Current Closet

  • Leggings: These were my go-to almost every day. I would go to Pure Barre in the mornings and stay in my leggings the rest of the day. No matter how big I got, the waistbands would always remain comfortably below the tummy.

  • Flow-y Garments: I had a lot of tunics and oversized tees, which had a lot of room in them. Many of my sundresses had lots of space, as well!

  • Stretch, Jersey Fabrics: When I wanted to dress up, I would turn to jersey fabrics because they would easily stretch - even at the end of the 3rd trimester!

sustainable-maternity-clothing

I considered buying only a few things at first, but I'm glad I didn't because I learned to work with a small wardrobe. Outfit repeating becomes the norm when you're pregnant - well, it should be in general, but it's definitely easier to do when you don't fit into as much as you used to! I think you'd be surprised to see how much you can still fit into - so my advice is to spend some time in your closet first and wait until you really need to purchase a maternity piece.

Secondhand Maternity Clothing

My first recommendation would be to consult your friends who are mothers! They may still have some maternity clothes in their closet that they no longer use. Most people are happy to part with items they no longer need.

Check out your local thrift and secondhand stores to start with, but if you have no luck, we suggest checking these places out: Used Clothing Apps

Ethically-Made New Maternity Clothing

Okay, so if your current closet doesn't have enough, and secondhand isn't cutting it - or you want to spoil yourself... I get it - pregnancy is exciting, and you should be able to treat yourself! Fortunately, there are some brands that are creating sustainable maternity clothing, and there are a lot of cute pieces.

MARION

This high-end maternity office wear brand helps mamas keep looking great at work during pregnancy & nursing. Their chic, versatile designs allow mamas to re-wear core pieces again and again. They offer standard & petite sizing, with some extended size options. MARION's designs are made with luxury sustainable fabrics like TENCEL, organic cotton, and recycled nylon. Most styles include invisible nursing access, so breastfeeding mamas don't need to buy twice. Designs are also made to look like "regular" clothes after pregnancy (really!), making each piece a long-term wardrobe investment. In addition to workwear, MARION carries a line of sustainable maternity basics.

Warp + Weft

This brand is quickly becoming one of my favorites. They offer plus size options (00-24), and their jeans are priced under $100.

They even have super cute overalls for pregnancy!

Pact

This is one of my favorite organic cotton brands, and their prices are more affordable than most. Everything they make is very comfortable and washes well.

Girlfriend

Another size-inclusive, sustainable brand, Girlfriend has a collection of maternity leggings, bike shorts, and nursing bras. Everything is made from recycled plastic bottles, and they go up to size 6XL.

Frugi

This is a UK childrenswear brand that has a small section for maternity. Frugi is one to check out if you love color and bold prints! They use GOTS-certified organic cotton for their designs.

Cosabella

Created 35 years ago by an Italian couple, Cosabella sells feminine lingerie, pajamas and loungewear. Find maternity underwear, camis, bras, pjs and more.

Postpartum Underwear

for after baby, you will love these!

Proof’s Postpartum Underwear has a super absorbent core, controls postpartum bleeding, has front-to-back protection & fights odor. Find different absorbency levels, colors, and styles.

Of An Origin

This brand offers a great minimalist capsule wardrobe for your entire pregnancy, postpartum, and even beyond.

Their tops, pants, and wraps are not only super practical for maternity and nursing, but they’re also timeless and can be styled in several different ways. Their feeding and pumping shirts, wraps, and cardigans don’t even look like nursing-wear!

Their clothing is Fair Trade and most of it is currently made out of natural cotton (they have some GOTS certified organic cotton styles coming!). They currently offer sizes Xs-XL and are working to expand their sizing options in the near future as well.

Whatever route you choose for your maternity wardrobe, I wish you a safe and healthy pregnancy. Your wardrobe should not add to the stress. I hope you find these tips helpful, and please feel free to share your own in the comments below.

Lots of love from one mama to another,

Natalie

10 Brands Selling Sustainable Laptop Sleeves To Keep Your Computer Safe While On-The-Go (2024)

the best eco-friendly laptop Bags, Sleeves & cases

Costing up to a few thousand dollars, laptops are expensive and valuable electronics that have become, over the past two decades, an essential tool in most people’s lives. However, producing electronics is a very unsustainable and unethical activity.

For instance, we need to mine rare minerals which are non-renewable resources. Mining is extremely damaging to the environment, not to mention the miners who work in very unhealthy and unsafe conditions.

The manufacturing process also relies on huge amounts of energy and water, and it has a massive carbon footprint. And at the end of their lives, electronics become e-waste which causes many other environmental issues.

Of course, we cannot completely stop using electronics as they play such a big role in today’s society. But what we can do is prolong their lives for as long as possible.

That is why we need to protect our precious laptops from spills, drops, scratches, and bumps. A high-quality laptop sleeve is a must-have, whether you need to take your laptop with you on your faraway adventures, on your commute to work, or on your next trip to the coffee shop.

We have selected ten brands that sell sustainable laptop sleeves to keep your laptop safe from the hustle and bustle of your daily life!

WHAT MAKES A LAPTOP SLEEVE SUSTAINABLE?

A laptop sleeve is eco-friendly when it is made with high-quality, sustainable materials in an ethical way. The workers who make it should be paid a fair wage and work in safe working conditions. The laptop sleeve should be built to last for many years without getting worn down.

A sustainable laptop sleeve should also protect your laptop efficiently. As we mentioned, electronics are damaging to the environment, so the sleeve needs to keep your laptop safe so that it can function well for many years to come.

WHAT ECO-FRIENDLY MATERIALS SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

Sustainable laptop sleeves can be made from a variety of eco-friendly materials. If you can find a sleeve made of organic cottonhemp or linen, that is amazing! But you could also choose one made using upcycled fabrics, or recycled materials like recycled polyester and recycled cotton.

Some laptop sleeves are made of leather, which is a durable material. But try to choose leather sourced from a tannery that was Gold-rated by the Leather Working Group, and that is tanned naturally using vegetable tannins.

Laptop sleeves made from apple leather, or any other type of vegan leather made using discarded fruits, are another eco-friendly option!

The Best Sustainable Kids Swimwear

Whenever you go to the beach, there are a few specific things you need to bring to make your trip fun and unforgettable. One of the most important things you should not forget to pack in your suitcase is your swimsuit.

Whether you enjoy swimming in the ocean or the pool or simply prefer relaxing on your beach towel, swimwear is absolutely essential to have.

Sometimes, it can be tricky to find a good-quality swimsuit. But as an adult, once you have found one or two you like, you can usually enjoy them for a while. For kids’ swimwear, it is a little different as children grow so quickly! You have to buy new swim shorts or bikini sets for your kids a lot more regularly!

Plus, as an eco-conscious parent, you might want to purchase swimsuits that will not harm the planet. This can be difficult because they are all made of synthetic materials, and we know how bad plastic is for our environment.

So if you are looking for new eco-friendly swimwear for your children this year, this article is for you! We have selected 9 brands selling sustainable kids’ swimsuits so that you and your family can create happy memories on your next trip to the beach!

What Makes Bathing Suits Sustainable?

When we see kids’ swimsuits costing as little as a few dollars at the store, we can easily be tempted to go for the cheap option. However, with such a low price tag, swimwear cannot be made to last or produced under ethical conditions.

So try to avoid fast fashion brands as much as possible, and support an ethical company that pays its workers a fair wage, treats them well and provides them with healthy, safe working conditions. Remember that when something is too cheap, someone in the supply chain is paying the price.

You also don’t want your child to lose his/her swimsuit while having fun with friends. So investing in quality is the way to go to make sure the piece will last.

Finally, try to support brands that have taken steps to minimize their environmental footprint, and choose swimwear made from eco-friendly materials.

What Eco-Friendly Materials Should You Search For?

Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to avoid synthetic materials when buying swimsuits as they have to be stretchy. Natural fabrics would also not last long if used in salt water or chlorine-filled swimming pools.

Thankfully, there are sustainable alternatives to polyester and nylon, which are what most swimsuits on the market are made of. For instance, recycled polyester and recycled nylon, produced from plastic water bottles or nylon fishing nets, are great options!

Buying swimwear made with these materials helps divert plastic waste from landfills and oceans and encourages manufacturers to stop using virgin petroleum-based materials to create new products.
