sustainable brands that tweens Will love

As someone who worked in tween retailing for many years, I know how easily forgettable those years can be for the rest of the fashion industry. Children’s clothing brands typically run to size 12/14; however, Tweens are their own little group - they aren’t truly children, and they aren’t teens who want to start shopping the adult brands. Not to mention, many sustainable kid brands stop their sizes before 10! It’s been almost impossible for me to find sustainable brands dedicated to this age group, BUT since I know Tween Fashion, I decided to create a list of brands carrying their size and making it fun.

What is a tween?

Tweens are ages 9-12, and they really should have their own little category when it comes to fashion and purchasing clothing. Within conventional fashion, you have your Justices, Abercrombie Kids, and so on, but this post is all about the sustainable alternatives to these brands!

What do tweens look for when choosing clothes or fashion?

Tweens have more opinions when it comes to clothing than children. They are starting to explore their style and express themselves. They want to break away from shopping at children's stores, but size-wise, they aren’t there yet. I think many of us can remember being Tweens, and feeling like we wanted to break away from our kiddo clothes.

Does tween fashion fall under children’s brands? Or do they have unique fashion brands for their age group?

They certainly have their own brands within the world of fast fashion - if you are in your 30s, you probably remember shopping at Limited Too (now Justice); however, most of these brands carry all children sizes but market towards the Tweens and Young Teens. Since sustainable fashion is still a relatively new concept to become popular within the industry, there is yet a brand dedicated to this age group. Luckily, several children’s brands carry their sizes and are fun and expressive enough for Tweens to enjoy. Now, let’s take a look at our top recommendations for the tween in your life!

Our top pics for tween sustainable fashion brands

1) Mightly

Mightly’s collection of tees, leggings, dresses, hoodies, and pajamas are Fair Trade certified from India and made from GOTS organic cotton and non-toxic, tween-safe dyes. Many of their designs are gender neutral and were created by Lili Arnold, an artist, and designer based in Santa Cruz, California. We love this brand for Tweens because of their carefree spirit and fun prints any Tween would rock wearing.

2) Hanna Andersson

If your tween loves Disney, prints, and colors, Hanna Andersson may be their new favorite clothing brand!

Started in Portland back in 1983, Hanna Andersson was perhaps the first sustainability-focused kids’ brand. Made from natural materials like organic cotton, their clothing is made to wear and wash over and over then handed down. They even have swimwear and accessories; plus, their sizes go up to a 14!

3) Infantium Victoria

This is a truly unique and beautiful brand for tweens!

Infantium Victoria was founded in 2014 by Julia Gaydina and Dinie van den Heuvel. They specialize in high-end organic and vegan fashion for kids up to size 16 and are inspired by romance and nostalgia. All clothing is ethically-made, and they only use organic materials and source, produce and distribute sustainably. I would have loved this brand as a tween.

4) Jackalo

This brand is meant to be played in and is constantly thinking about its impact on the planet. Not too long ago, a contributor posted about the benefits of circular fashion. This brand is an excellent example of this because they recycle all scrap fabric generated from the production process, support a culture of repair and reuse AND offer discounts on future purchases when customers send back their used Jackalo™ products for repair or upcycling! I think more brands could follow suit :)

5) Pact

Just need some basics for your tweens? Pact is probably one of the most well-known organic cotton brands, and you can’t beat their prices. All of their products are made in Fair Trade certified factories that provide safe working conditions and supports the local communities, and the cotton is Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified.

6) Warp & Weft

This is the best place to look for denim for your tweens. Warp & Weft’s denim is affordable for the entire family.

You can find plain denim, colored denim, shorts and skirts. Elliott and I both have a pair of their jeans, and love them!

Warp & Weft is a family-owned company that has been in the denim business for three decades - so they know their jeans.
