SNL's Latest Skit Shines a Light on Fast Fashion Giants Temu and Shein & We Are Here For It!

SNL Fast Fashion Ad Skit

This was too good not to share! SNL has made us laugh (slightly cringe because it’s true) once again with their ‘Xiemu’ Ad exposing the dark side of fast fashion. From exploitation of workers to hazardous products, Temu & Shein are making disposable fashion cheaper and scarier than ever.

What is Fast Fashion?

Fast fashion refers to brands that produce high volumes of clothing throughout the year. These brands now make clothes at a fraction of the price they used to, enabling consumers to update their wardrobes quickly and affordably.

But this over-consumption of cheaply-made clothes is leading to the huge growth of textile waste, pollution, and the depletion of natural resources. It is raising social issues that we can no longer ignore, such as human rights violations.

The best thing we can do, as consumers, is to stop supporting this industry. We should avoid fast fashion brands and start supporting sustainable clothing brands instead (& shopping secondhand and loving what we already have!).

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A FAST FASHION BRAND?

Temu and Shein are not the only culprits. In truth, most clothing brands today are part of the fast fashion problem. A majority of fast fashion brands release new clothing collections every week and use marketing techniques to encourage consumers to buy into new trends. These companies are often vague and not entirely transparent about their suppliers and production processes. They do not provide specific information about their efforts to mitigate their environmental impact.

Additionally, they do not offer evidence that they provide their workers with decent and safe working conditions, as well as living wages.

Many fast fashion brands are greenwashing. They are disclosing misleading information to fool customers into thinking they’re an ethical and sustainable company.

Cheap prices are also a great indicator of fast fashion products and their poor quality. It’s nearly impossible to produce a $5 t-shirt, pay garment workers fairly, and have manufacturing processes that do not harm the environment.

The Best Size Inclusive Swimwear brands that are also Sustainable!

With summer right around the corner, you may be looking for a new sustainable swimsuit. Swimsuits should make us feel confident and comfortable. They should be made to fit our bodies - not the other way around. Unfortunately, many sustainable swimwear companies don’t offer inclusive sizing. This makes it incredibly difficult for women of all shapes and sizes to shop sustainably. That’s why we’re here to help. Below, we’ve put together seven fantastic, size inclusive swimwear brands you’ll love.

What Makes Swimwear Size Inclusive?

Size inclusive swimwear is simply swimwear that goes beyond straight sizes. This means the swimsuit is offered in sizes above XL or a women’s size 14/16.

If a swimwear brand is size inclusive, they aren’t making a separate “plus-size” line. They simply offer all of their products in a wider range of sizes. This ensures that most bodies have access to the same styles, fits, and coverage - no matter their size.

All of the brands included in this article are size inclusive. We’ve also chosen brands that offer a range of price points to ensure that there are accessible options available.

What Should You Look For In Sustainable Swimwear?

When it comes to figuring out if a swimwear company is indeed sustainable, there are a few things you should look out for. Sustainable brands will use ethical labor, sustainable production methods, and eco-friendly materials.

So what exactly makes a fabric sustainable? Sustainable swimwear can be made from a variety of eco-friendly fabrics, but they are typically made using recycled materials. Most sustainable swimwear will still have a small percentage of virgin synthetic fibers. The majority of materials used, however, should be from recycled, regenerated, or natural sources. Sustainable companies should note what fabrics and fibers they use.

The most commonly used materials in sustainable swimwear are:

*we typically wouldn’t recommend this brand as a whole, but we do appreciate their commitment to sustainability for their swimwear line

Ultimate Guide to Sustainable Denim Jackets

Are you a fashion enthusiast who also cares about the planet? The fashion industry is one of the most significant contributors to pollution and waste, so it's time to change and embrace sustainable fashion! These sustainable jean jackets are stylish and made with ethical and eco-friendly practices. From recycled materials to organic cotton, these denim jackets are created with the planet in mind. Whether you prefer a classic blue jean jacket or want to experiment with something a little more edgy, there's a sustainable option for everyone. Not only will you be positively impacting the environment, but you'll also be supporting brands that prioritize sustainability. By opting for a sustainable denim jacket, you choose quality over quantity and invest in a wardrobe staple that will last for years!

The Environmental Impact of Traditional Denim Jackets

Traditional denim jackets may be iconic and stylish but have a high environmental cost. The production process of conventional denim involves using harmful chemicals, excessive water consumption, and significant carbon emissions. Additionally, the fast fashion industry's focus on cheap and disposable clothing means that denim jackets are often discarded after a few wears, contributing to the growing problem of textile waste.

The production of traditional denim also contributes to water pollution. The dyeing and finishing processes involve toxic chemicals that end up in rivers and other water bodies, affecting aquatic life and ecosystems. Furthermore, the cultivation of conventional cotton, the most common material used in denim, requires large amounts of water and pesticides, further adding to the environmental impact.

What is a Sustainable Denim Jacket?

A sustainable denim jacket is one that you can wear for many, many years, made ethically with eco-friendly materials. We look for many things when deciding if a brand should be featured here on Sustainably Chic, but the material, quality, and manufacturing are some of the most important features.

We also believe that one of the most sustainable denim jackets is the one you already have in your closet :)

Benefits of Sustainable Denim Jackets

Sustainable denim jackets offer a solution to the environmental issues caused by traditional denim production. These jackets are made with ethical and eco-friendly practices, reducing their environmental impact and providing fair wages for their makers. By choosing a sustainable denim jacket, you're not only making a fashion statement but also taking a stand against the harmful practices of the fashion industry.

Most sustainable denim jackets are made with organic cotton. Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton is grown without the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers, reducing the impact on soil health, water quality, and biodiversity. Read more about organic cotton & its benefits here. Many sustainable brands also repurpose old denim or other fabrics to create new jackets, reducing the demand for virgin resources and diverting textile waste from landfills. By giving new life to old garments, these jackets contribute to a circular economy, where resources are used more efficiently and waste is minimized. If you want to learn more about circular fashion and why it’s essential for sustainable fashion brands to adopt, read this.

We also always suggest searching through your favorite vintage and secondhand shops to find denim jackets, too!

Our Top Picks for Sustainable Denim Jackets:

Favorite Denim Jackets: The Merly (comes in 3 washes) and the Lennon Boyfriend

Ethical fashion brand ABLE launched its first denim jacket (the Merly) in 2017 and has since added several more styles! Their denim partners in Mexico provide well-paying, dignified jobs to over 550 women. Denim has been known to dirty waterways in the towns where it is produced. ABLE makes sure to clean all the water used in the production process in its wastewater treatment plant. We love that ABLE is one of the most transparent, sustainable fashion brands, with accessible pricing and more inclusive sizing!

2. Warp + Weft

If you are looking for sustainable denim jackets for men and women at an affordable price, Warp + Weft is the place! Their family-run eco-friendly mill is one of the world's largest textile manufacturers, which means they can create high-quality denim that's good for you, the planet, and your wallet. They have many styles, including denim shirt jackets, denim vests, and a few pops of color. Through their partnership with Recover™, Warp + Weft's recycling facility transforms post-industrial and post-consumer waste into recycled fiber that can be woven into new yarn - for future denim styles. This is an excellent example of circular fashion

3. Outerknown

Price: $268

Pro surfer Kelly Slater is behind this Fair Labor Association-accredited brand, which makes garments that, 90% of the time, are made of recycled, organic, and 'regenerative' materials. Outerknown has two denim jackets - their unisex Tides Trucker Jean Jacket, made from 100% organic cotton, and the men's Blanket Trucker, made from organic cotton & recycled cotton. Plus, the company works with three partners who are certified through Fair Trade USA. Want something a little lighter than a denim jacket? Check out the women's Canyon Jean Shacket with its timeless oversized fit with button-down cuffs.

4. Outland Denim

Price: $182-359

This ethical brand uses traceable, sustainable organic cotton to create timeless denim jackets. Outland is dedicated to abolishing slavery, with freedom and liberty being core to the brand and its values. The brand makes its clothing in Cambodia, where unjust practices are rife in the textile industry. In opposition to this, the brand pays fair living wages and offers a safe, comfortable alternative for working women – often those previously working in dangerous sweatshop conditions. Outland Denim labels include messages from the seamstresses who make the garments, making your purchase all the more special.

5. Whimsy + Row

Price: $176

Whimsy + Row produces limited batches that are all handcrafted in Los Angeles. The brand only uses locally sourced and eco-friendly materials and recycles every scrap of deadstock fabric to turn it into new garments or accessories.  Their only denim jacket features a chunky organic corozo button closure, two overlapping pockets on the right, and a single pocket on the left. It is made from 100% organic cotton and comes in classic dark blue and vintage black. Whimsy + Row is also carbon-neutral, and its pieces are made using recycled water and low-impact dyes.

6. Kings of Indigo

Price: €180,00

A denim jacket made with one of our favorite blends - organic cotton and Tencel! The Ota jacket is workwear-inspired, with a hidden button placket and buttons at the sleeve opening. Many Kings of Indigo’s Tencel garments are 100% Tencel or blended with other compostable fabrics, ensuring that biodegradability and sustainability remain intact. Adding Tencel to cotton provides a softer touch & breathability, which makes for a great everyday season-to-season jacket. The brand also publishes information about where their fabrics are milled and where their garments are made - a win for transparency!

7. ArmedAngels

Price: €58.74 - €125.97

This brand is all about detoxing the denim we wear. DetoxDenim means eradicating unnecessary chemicals & bleaching without toxic chlorine. ArmedAngels uses a lot of recycled cotton blended with organic cotton. They are also a very circular fashion brand in that customers can return their old Armed Angels t-shirt or denim via the ‘take-back system’ and they will be turned into new items. They even have a secondhand reselling platform, and they founded a non-profit that supports farmers in their transition to organic farming. This is just another excellent example of how a sustainable fashion brand can become circular!

Sustainable Denim Jacket Care and Maintenance

To ensure that your sustainable denim jacket lasts for years to come, proper care is essential. Here are some tips to keep your jacket looking its best:

  1. Wash Less: Denim jackets don't need to be washed as frequently as other garments. Spot clean any stains and only wash when necessary to conserve water and energy.

  2. Cold Water and Gentle Cycle: When washing your denim jacket, use cold water and choose the gentle cycle. This helps preserve the color and shape of the jacket.

  3. Air Dry: Instead of using a dryer, air dry your denim jacket to save energy and prevent shrinkage or damage. Hang it in a well-ventilated area or lay it flat to dry.

  4. Avoid Ironing: Denim jackets often look best with a slightly worn-in appearance, so avoid ironing unless absolutely necessary. If needed, use a steamer or a low-heat iron.

  5. Store Properly: When not in use, store your denim jacket in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This helps maintain its color and prevents unnecessary wear.

By following these care and maintenance tips, you can extend the life of your sustainable denim jacket and reduce the need for frequent replacements.

12 American-Made Denim Brands for High-Quality Jeans

Image: AYR Jeans

American-Made Denim

Denim is fundamentally American. From the high-quality workwear jeans made in mills during the 1930’s, to the rise of Levi’s throughout the 19th century, Americans have long been proud to sport blue jeans. Despite these origins, the rise of fast fashion and overseas production have diluted the quality and craftsmanship of many blue jeans available on the market today. Gone are the handmade buttons and hand-stitched seams, while spandex-filled jean substitutes and mass-produced overalls take their place.

Luckily, there are still a number of brands that honor America’s history as a denim manufacturer. These brands not only continue to make their jeans in the United States, but they also draw upon the designs, practices, equipment, and even mills that were used nearly a century ago. Compared to fast fashion jeans, you’ll definitely feel and notice the difference in these jeans, which are intended to outlast even the hardest wear.

For men’s, women’s and gender-neutral jeans that are made in the USA with sustainability and heritage in mind, refer to these brands below and always check where your jeans are sourced and produced. That way, you can wear a pair of pants that makes you proud to be American.

Our Top Picks for American-Made Denim Brands:

1. AYR Jeans

AYR (all year round) is a denim brand that makes all of its jeans in Los Angeles. This West Coast denim company is on a mission to make “versatile, comfortable, easy-wearing essentials” that can be worn throughout the calendar year — and that last for years to come. In addition to making men’s and women’s jeans, AYR also makes denim shirts, like their “The Deep End,” a lightweight, Turkish-inspired classic shirt. Additionally, AYR makes denim jackets that are perfect for wearing in any season and layering with jeans for a classic Canadian tuxedo look, or over a dress for an elevated casual style.

2. Sendero Provisions Co

Sendero makes men’s and women’s clothing, hats, accessories, and jeans that celebrate and are inspired by the great American West. Sendero, the Spanish word for “trail,” is infused into the brand by making products that go with you on your journey through life (and turn some heads along the way). Rather than taking already-made jeans and t-shirts and branding them, like many fast fashion companies do, Sendero makes each piece according to their unique design. If you’re looking for jeans that have a western flair and will stay durable and stylish for years to come, you’ll find them at Sendero.

3. Aviator

Traveling in jeans hasn’t historically been the most comfortable idea, but Aviator changes that. This made-in-the-USA brand is specifically designed to make high-quality jeans that make travel effortless and chic. Aviator jeans are soft and made to last, and they’ve been rated as the best jeans for travel by numerous media outlets. Thoughtful design elements make these men’s and women’s jeans plane-friendly, including two hidden zipper pockets inside the regular pockets which allow you to carry your ID and other essentials. They also have more stretch than the average jean and have added softness that allows you to sit on a plane for long periods of time without being uncomfortable or having your jeans lose their shape.

4. Imogene + Willie

Imogene + Willie makes jeans right in their Nashville, Tennessee factory, with an additional shop in Austin. Making all of their clothing inside the United States was one of their initial goals when they founded the factory back in 2009. They also make sure that everything they create is made using small-batch production, which eliminates unnecessary waste. If you’re buying your first pair of jeans with them, you can visit the denim bar in their shop, or you can give them a call directly to walk through the different options. They only offer refunds on their full-priced items within 30 days of delivery, so keep this in mind if you’re buying something online.

5. Left Field NYC

This New York-based brand was founded in 1998 by Christian McCann, who sought to create quality, American-made clothing that honored the traditions of days gone past. Left Field specializes in workwear that is outfitted with details, such as interior pocket prints and specialized buttons. This jean brand intends to create an alternative to clothing mass-produced in other countries while also showcasing American culture through clothing that retains classic features but feels modern, too. They create many of their jeans using selvedge denim, which means that it’s “self finished” on the edge and won’t fray — adding to the appeal of these jeans which are designed to remain timeless.

6. Hiroshi Kato

At Hiroshi Kato, made-in-America mens jeans are inspired by classic garments, the need for comfort, and a love for vintage style. Originally designed in Japan, Hiroshi Kato now makes all of its jeans inside the United States, focusing on menswear that’s both durable and tasteful. Kato is the creator of Denit, a knit material that has the appearance of high quality pants, but the feel of your favorite loungewear. By focusing on small-batch production runs rather than mass production, Hiroshi Kato can focus on crafting garments that utilize special stitches and other more time-confusing techniques that enhance the specialty and craft of their jeans.

7. Ginew

Ginew is a Native American-owned clothing brand that uses sustainable, durable materials in all of their products, from Vidalia Mills raw selvedge denim to 100% cotton fabrics. In addition to producing all of their clothing in the USA, Ginew wants to uplift Native Americans by honoring their processes and traditions, fusing Ojibwe, Oneida, and Stockbridge-Munsee style. Each item they make is directly inspired by one of their relatives or community members, either in name, style, function, or technique. This brand makes men’s and women’s jeans, with an emphasis on selvedge denim made from deadstock fabric and adorned with rivets, zippers, and hardware all made in the USA. Ginew also partners directly with Native American artisans, whose products include fundraising items that directly support Native youth.

8. Raleigh Denim Workshop

At Raleigh Denim Workshop, you’ll find men’s and women’s jeans designed and made in North Carolina.

This brand has a literal workshop where their denim and other clothes are manufactured, and it also serves as a community hub for local Raleigh residents. The Workshop prides itself on sourcing high-quality materials that have an ethical, transparent supply chain, and using vintage sewing machines for a classic production process that ensures quality. They also offer hemming services, so you can send in your jeans to be hemmed to the perfect length, adding to their longevity.

9. NOEND Denim

At NOEND Denim, each pair of jeans is crafted in Los Angeles and designed to celebrate America’s history of denim manufacturing while forging an individualized, authentic future. NOEND has a range of women’s styles available, from straight and skinny cuts to tapered, boot leg and baggy, so there’s truly something for everyone. NOEND is known for creating fashion-forward jeans that are also functional and true to size, making it easy to find the right fit. They also make men’s jeans as well as tops, jumpsuits, jackets and accessories made in America. Search their jeans by rise, fit, category, and other filters.

10. Glenn’s Denim

Glenn Liburd became passionate about jeans while working at a clothing workshop in his native Trinidad, a journey that took him to Levi’s as the lead denim tailor and eventually to the opening of his own denim workshop, Glenn’s Denim. All of Glenn’s jeans are made in America and honor Glenn’s journey of coming to America and finding success through hard work. Glenn makes selvedge and non-selvedge jeans, slim jeans, straight jeans, slouchy jeans, and denim jackets. Most of his jeans are raw, meaning they haven’t been washed and allow the wearer to break them in according to their own lifestyle and preferences, but his inventory also includes washed denim that has a more broken-in feel.

11. Wiesmade

Wiesmade Denim is transparently farmed, milled, and sewn in the USA. All of their materials are also sourced nearby where their heritage denim is made; for instance, they source cotton from Louisiana just a mile from their denim mill. Their philosophy is to validate a “less is more” mindset by creating rugged, workwear-inspired jeans that last. Their commitment to quality is echoed by their dedication to community — after two years of development, they established strong relationships with local suppliers across the United States who can support an ethical supply chain. The Wiesmade jeans headquarters is in Petaluma, California, where the rugged coast and nature inspires their eco-friendly denim designs.

12. B Sides

B Sides makes high quality denim in the USA. Their jeans range in style and fit, with everything from slim straight stretchy styles to slouchy low-rise jeans with a shaped outseam that gives an elevated look to the classic and popular wide leg jean style. B Sides gets its name from records, where the B side is usually the quirkier, more original side of the record without the popular hits. Similarly, instead of giving into mainstream fashion practices and trends, B Sides jeans sources denim from Georgia and North Carolina using washes, fades, and techniques inspired by the old days. B sides jeans are made to be unique, yet timeless enough so you can wear them forever.

SUSTAINABLE AMERICAN-MADE CLOTHING

Many consumers in the United States regularly make the conscious choice of buying USA-made clothes. They want to support the local economy and help create more jobs for American workers.

Buying American-made clothing can also be a lot more sustainable. Indeed, the items usually travel far shorter distances than if they were imported from the other side of the world, which reduces their carbon footprint. American companies are also held to higher labor and environmental standards than if they were to produce in most other countries abroad.

However, not all USA-made products are made with the environment in mind! In this article, we have rounded up 17 sustainable brands selling American-made clothing, so you can support both your country and the planet at the same time.

WHAT MAKES AMERICAN-MADE CLOTHING SUSTAINABLE?

Sustainable American-made clothing is crafted from eco-friendly fabrics and dyed with non-toxic, low-impact dyes. It is produced prioritizing quality and durability.

The brand should also implement different sustainable practices throughout its supply chain. For instance, it should try to reduce its textile waste and find ways to upcycle or recycle its fabric scraps. Or it should reduce its chemical use and water and energy consumption.

Finally, the company should also treat its workers well and pay them fair wages. So many brands are still involved in unfair labor practices

WHAT ECO-FRIENDLY FABRICS SHOULD YOU SEARCH FOR?

Some of the most sustainable fabrics you should look for are organic cottonlinenTencelhemp, and all kinds of recycled materials including recycled wool, recycled cotton, or recycled polyester.

You can also find great American-made clothing crafted using deadstock fabrics!

NOW, OUR TOP PICKS FOR SUSTAINABLE AMERICAN-MADE CLOTHING BRANDS
