The Best Eco-Friendly, Sustainable & Organic Beach Towels

It’s about that time when we start thinking about sunny beach trips and packing our bags for some much-needed ocean time. While I’ve always been one to grab a towel out of our bathroom, it is nice to have a designated beach towel you can lay out comfortably on. This list has brands committed to better materials and ethical production - and make super cute beach towels that dry quickly and pack easy!

Why Choose an Organic Cotton Beach Towel

Whenever you are venturing out into nature, it’s always important to take care of your surroundings, so why not think about the things you purchase for your outdoor lifestyle?

Besides organic cotton being ultra-absorbent and cozy for Long Beach days, it is also grown without the use of synthetic pesticides and herbicides. Organic cotton crops can be sprayed with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) natural proteins to protect them from insect infestation and crop destruction, but not with the cocktail of toxic chemicals often sprayed over conventional cotton crops. This not only helps to protect farmers, but the environment, too. Eutrophication occurs when water is overly enriched with nutrients, often due to fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, which can result in dead-zones in water, where life struggles to persist.

However, not all organic cotton is created equal - while still a better choice than conventional - you can learn more about the issues regarding the fabric here. Also, make sure to look out for GOTS Certified or OEKO-TEX® certified when shopping organic cotton products.

Other Sustainable Fabrics for Beach Towels

If you are looking for more of a performance beach towel - particularly one that can shake off sand easily - then towels made from recycled plastic would be better suited for you and your needs. We have two brands listed in this post that offer microfiber towels, which are very absorbent and do not attract sticking sand. However, microplastics are always an issue with microfiber fabrics, so make sure to use a Guppy Bag when washing them to avoid microplastics from entering our waterways.

Our Top Picks for Sustainable Beach Towels:

1) Coyuchi

Price | $98-108

Material | Organic Cotton

An excellent choice for a Turkish towel, Coyuchi’s flatweave Mediterranean set features a beach towel size in five different colors.

They are woven from yarn-dyed organic cotton and come with the signature hand-knotted fringe.

The cotton is grown and woven in the Aegean region of Turkey, and it is GOTS (a great certification) + Made Safe Certified.

2) West Elm

Price | $35-80

Material | Organic Cotton

I am loving the Pool Scene beach towel pictured here. Too cute! West Elm always has something fun to add to these lists, and their prices can (sometimes) be a bit more affordable.

Their organic cotton is GOTS certified, and they have Turkish-style towels as well as Terry depending on your preference. While I love supporting smaller brands more, this is still a good option.

3) Minna

Price | $98

Material | Cotton

I’ve always thought this brand made such beautiful textiles! MINNA uses traditional craft techniques to produce ethical goods with a contemporary aesthetic.

For example, their new colorful beach towels are handwoven in partnership with weavers in Nahualá, Guatemala - and the cotton used in their products is colored with natural dyes or toxin-free synthetic dyes!

4) Pottery Barn

Price | $30-50

Material | Organic Cotton

Another popular organic cotton beach towel, Pottery Barn is known for its classic stripes and customizable options. The awning-stripe design lets you choose your color, and the monogram option offers a personal touch. It’s that perfect timeless, preppy poolside vibe!

Their organic cotton is also OEKO-TEX & GOTS Certified. We also linked up their ‘sustainably sourced’ towels for easy shopping.

5) Hilana

Price | $40-55

Material | Upcycled Cotton

This is a unique towel because it uses 50% of its threads with regenerated cotton making it a more low-waste product. They are traditional flat-woven Turkish peshtemal and crafted by artisans in Turkey. Hilana is a B Corp Certified company creating sustainably made towels, throws, shawls, tablecloths & bathrobes that are soft & absorbent.

I've used these towels for my hair for years - always right after I wash it or after swimming in the ocean or pool. They are a must-have for my long, wet hair!!

7) QuiQuattro

Price | $40-$85

Material | Authentic Turkish Cotton

All of the towels from this Ohio-based, woman-owned business are made be women artisans in Turkey (right where the cotton is grown and harvested!). I love how these lightweight towels can actually double as a beach or bath towel… or even a picnic blanket! They’re available in a variety of different colors, patterns, and designs—whether you’re looking for something fun and colorful or something more neutral and timeless. This is an especially great option for travel, since these towels won’t take up a ton of space in your suitcase!

8) Affina

Inspired by our coral reefs, Affina's Seaweaves™ colorful beach towel collection is woven from natural brain coral and sea fan patterns.

These luxuriously oversized towels are made from 100% organic cotton using low-impact, fiber-reactive dyes and are Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex® and GOTS certified.

9) Weezie

Price | $78+

These luxurious, oversized beach towels are plush, and the cotton is cut close to avoid picking up extra sand when sitting at the beach.

They are made in Portugal with 100% organic long-staple cotton, and are hypoallergenic, low linting and OEKO-TEX® certified.

You can also monogram or have a personalized embroidery on these towels!

10) Finisterre

11) Delilah Home

Price | $40

Material | Organic Cotton

These soft beach and pool towels are European-crafted and made of 100% GOTS-certified organic Turkish cotton. The extra-long loops make the towels highly absorbent, soft, and up to 50% thicker than most other towels.

Plus, they’re responsibly made in a family-run factory in Portugal using state-of-the-art machinery and higher than Fair Trade wages.

12) Sand Cloud

Price | $48-70

Material | Organic Cotton

If you are looking for some extra-large beach towels, this is your place!

Sand Cloud creates sand-resistant towels that dry 3xs faster than a conventional cotton beach towel. They have lots of fun prints and colors, too.

Sustainable Beach Gear

We are getting closer and closer to beach season, so I thought a list of sustainable beach items would be useful for your next trip! It is incredible how we can have sustainable beach chairs, umbrellas, towels, and even coolers to keep all our food cool. This certainly was not around when I was growing up, but I’m ready to see my son sitting on his little eco-friendly beach chair with non-toxic sunscreen all summer long :)

What to look for when shopping for sustainable beach products

First, use what you have or borrow from your friends & family. We make a lot of shopping guides & think it's necessary to remind consumers they probably already have something they can use, which is the most sustainable option.

Since you are enjoying the beach, you want to make sure the products you bring with you respect the environment they are in. For example, you don't want to get toxic sunscreens that could potentially harm sea life, so why not use a product that positively impacts the oceans by removing plastic from them? Whenever I look at a brand that creates products to use in nature, I love knowing they give back to the planet through either the materials they use or environmental organizations. Every brand listed in this post highly regards the environment and keeps the planet's health at the forefront of their business.

why is it important to protect our oceans?

According to conservation.org, we dump 8 million metric tons of plastic annually into the oceans. This is equivalent to 57,000 blue whales. You may have heard this statistic, but by 2050, more plastic will be in the sea than fish. Much of this plastic will break down into what is known as microplastics. Animals will then ingest these tiny pieces of plastic, and if fish is part of your diet, you will then consume this plastic.

We must not only be aware of the packaging we bring to the beach (& cleaning up after ourselves) but choose items made from natural materials or recycled plastics taken from the ocean rather than virgin plastics. While we aren't always a fan of recycled plastic in clothing because of the thread of microplastics in your washing machine, the material can be found in many other products we don't have to continuously launder.

Now, our favorite eco-friendly & sustainable beach accessories:

1. Foldable Eco-Friendly Beach Chairs from LowTides

I could not be more excited to find a sustainable beach chair brand!! With a truckload of plastic being dumped into our oceans every day (yeah, it’s terrible), there has to be something positive to come from all the waste.

LowTides uses this ocean plastic to create their collection of Sandbar Low ChairsDune High ChairsGully Child Chairs - and the prints are so fun! Their newest collections include one with global fashion brand Laura Ashley and New Jersey based beloved surf brand Jetty. To date, LowTides has removed 28,000+ lbs of plastic from our oceans.

These chairs are effortless to carry with their two back straps. They also have two cup holders to enjoy refreshing drinks while looking at the waves. LowTides has also recently launched some new eco-friendly accessories. We love their Multipurpose Beachpac you can attach to your beach chair!

2. Eco-Friendly Beach Towels

Of course, the most sustainable beach towel option you have is the one you already own, but if you need a new beach towel, we have a couple of brands for you to check out below…

CoyuchiInspired by the striped sarape blankets of Mexico, these beautiful towels are ethically made in Turkey out of 100% GOTS certified organic cotton.

Affina: Inspired by our coral reefs, Affina's Seaweaves™ colorful beach towel collection is woven from natural brain coral and sea fan patterns on 100% Organic Cotton.

3. Bassk Umbrella

I have wanted a beautiful, big beach umbrella for years. But I haven’t bought one yet, and I’m glad I waited because I found this fantastic brand recently!

These beauties are made with Recycled Plastic Bottle fabric called Repreve® that offers UPF 50+.

The sweet tassels are 100% cotton, and the hardware is made from recycled plastic.

They also come with a super easy assemble click-in pole mechanism, and it’s rust-resistant.

4. Igloo Repreve Coolers

I love that Igloo has started using more eco-friendly materials with its products. These coolers are great because they are made from recycled plastic bottles and come as a tote that is much easier to carry to the beach. In addition, the Packable Puffer features REPREVE® performance fiber exterior material made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles and Primaloft® Gold insulation made from 90% post-consumer recycled fibers. It has 8 hours of ice retention and can hold 20 cans. Find it in 5 different colors - teal, magenta, black, blue, purple.

5. Eco-Friendly Beach Bags

You may already have a bag that works just fine, but I thought I would include a few sweet ones.

Made Trade has some lovely ones, whether you’re looking for a sturdy basket-bag or a canvas tote. My favorite type of beach bags are ones made from natural fibers like rattan. (use code SUSTAINABLYCHIC for $20 off your first order of $150+).

We also love this Pom Pom Tote from The Little Market. It's made with hand-woven raffia, and each purchase empowers artisan women at Razafindrabe Collections in Madagascar.

6. Sustainable Swimwear

I have an entire post dedicated to sustainable swimsuits; there are so many to choose from.

However, it has been almost impossible to find swimsuits made without some synthetic fiber (if unfamiliar, these fibers are petrochemical-based and do not biodegrade like natural fibers).

Micro-plastics are still an issue in ethical swimwear, BUT brands are working to ensure not to use virgin synthetics. One of our favorite brands for sustainable swimwear is Vitamin A.

7. Sustainable Sandals & Flip Flops

Are you looking for a new pair of flip-flops? When I think of the beach, I automatically think of flip-flops, but you could wear any sandals.

I have a post with all my favorites here, and if you prefer something easy to clean and slide into, I highly recommend Oka-B.

Third Oak is another great brand to look into.

Avoid virgin petroleum-based materials when looking for new flip-flops, and remember that investing in quality is worth it.

8. Non-Toxic Sunscreen

Like myself, you are probably worried about the environmental impact of some of the conventional sunscreens.

For example, sunscreen will stay in the water when swimming in the ocean, and some ecosystems are very fragile. So we need to respect their space as much as our own space.

Another big reason for the switch would be skin irritation. I’ve had a few sun breakouts with sunscreens, so I’ve become picky over the years.

Here’s my list of favorites.

9. Sustainable Sunglasses

I’m terrible at keeping track of my sunglasses, so I try to have a couple of pairs on hand.

Luckily, several brands make eco-friendly, durable sunnies that are super cute.

So if you’re looking for new sustainable sunglasses this year, check out my recommendations below.

This list showcases eco-friendly sunglasses made with recycled and plant-based plastics.

Our favorites are from MITA.

10. Sustainable Sun Hats

A wide-brimmed sun hat is perfect if you want more protection from the hot summer sun.

The Ombre Holiday Papale Sun Hat is handcrafted in Bali from palm leaf.

It’s easy to wear with your hair up or down!

We also love the Rattan Sun Visor, a vintage-inspired piece with a modern and playful twist.

The Best Eco-Friendly Outdoor Gear You'll Need to Hike And Camp Sustainably

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliated, so we may earn a small commission if you click through and make a purchase. We only add brands & products we truly believe in.

The Best Sustainable Camping & Hiking Gear

Exploring the great outdoors is one of the most sustainable things we can do. Unfortunately, in today’s world, it can be easier than not to harm the natural environment. However, if you’re planning a hiking or camping trip, certain things can be considered to explore more sustainably. One of the most important things we can do is to be mindful of what we bring with us into nature. In this article, we’ll cover the best eco-friendly outdoor gear so you can enjoy your next hiking or camping adventure more sustainably.

Why Does Eco-Friendly Outdoor Gear Matter?

Many of the things we use in our everyday life aren’t great for the environment, but it’s especially important to be mindful of what we use and do when spending time outdoors. Popular places to hike and camp are typically protected, natural areas that aren’t used to human interference like cities are. As such, diverse habitats can become endangered when we bring plastic, pollutants, and other unnatural substances.

Whether hiking on a trail or camping in the woods, it’s crucial to pack eco-friendly items that won’t negatively impact the natural surroundings. That may look like not bringing plastic items when possible, choosing biodegradable toiletries, and properly disposing of our trash.

One source of plastic pollution that we commonly forget about is our clothes and fabrics. Traditional outdoor gear is usually made with plastic and synthetic materials that break down while using them. Choosing items made from natural materials with as few synthetic or plastic materials as possible can help combat this.

Where to Find Sustainable Hiking and Camping Gear:

If you’re looking for sustainable outdoor gear, look for items made from natural and recycled materials. Numerous sustainable brands produce items like compostable cutlery, plastic-free coolers, and eco-friendly activewear.

Another great option is to buy used instead of new. In general, the most sustainable item is the one you already own or one that someone else has already owned. Sporting goods stores, and some prominent sustainable brands, sell or rent camping gear essentials. This is a great way to avoid supporting new consumption and instead reusing what’s already been made.

Some awesome places to find sustainable and used outdoor gear are:

That being said, many used items may still be made from plastic or synthetic materials. So finding an eco-friendly version from a sustainable brand is best if you need something traditionally made from unsustainable materials, like plastic coolers.

Below, you’ll find the top eco-friendly outdoor gear essentials to help you hike or camp as sustainably as possible.
