SUSTAINABLE OOTD

Quick confession - I used never to wear a bra. Even while I was pregnant, you rarely found me in one. However, after having a baby and breastfeeding around the clock, I’ve grown to love them - bralettes over underwire bras any day, though! & lace... lots and lots of lace! I've found this new Swiss brand, Troo, has the most beautiful lingerie…

Shop the Look:

Safari Bralette, Troo $70

All intimates from Troo are handmade in Cape Town with ‘love, cheek and lots of laughs’ - {haha, love that!}. Besides its lovely aesthetic, what’s so great about this line is the choice of material. Each piece is made from off-cut fabric from prominent designers. Yes - this line is promoting zero waste within the fashion industry!! Their Nette Rose line features bralettes, knickers & slips, all made from the most dainty and romantic fabrics. How could this have been someone else’s waste to begin with!? The Safari braille is dreamy. Not only am I in love with the aesthetic, but its comfort, too! Especially with breastfeeding, I need a bra that isn’t too overwhelming yet supportive, and the Safari does just that - all while being beautiful in the process!

Hygge Robe, JJWinks $110

Esmont Bed, Savvy Rest $1,649

Comforter, Under the Canopy $130

Classic Organic Sheets, Sol Organics $149

Summer Strolls with Greentom

When I first found out I was pregnant, I began thinking about the many things I would need as a new mom - crib, car seats, baby clothes, etc. - A stroller was one of the items I thought wasn’t as necessary. Boy, was I wrong!! Strollers have quickly become my favorite baby item. Since I’m home even more so with the baby, it’s been nice to go on morning and evening walks around the neighborhood. Fresh air does the body good - and Elliott loves how bouncy the Riverside sidewalks can be {those tree roots are making new homes}!

2-in-1 Stroller, Greentom $699

Not only is this the greenest stroller in the world, it’s probably one of the lightest, too! At only 16 pounds, you won’t have any trouble moving this frame from house to car {I was always worried about being able to fold and pack them up for adventures far from my home!}. The carrycot and reversible combination travel system is perfect for conscious parents trying to keep their footprint low with the many items they need for their baby. This frame can hold multiple chairs for your little one, so you never have to buy a completely new stroller based on their size. Pictured is the carrycot, which is great for newborns up to six months. The mattress is super soft & made with 100% organic cotton, flax, and wool. No wonder Elliott has enjoyed so many naps in here over the last few weeks! & can you believe this carrycot fabric saved 31 plastic bottles from the landfill? Plus, they are keeping your child’s skin safe with 50+ UPF built in, too!

#SwapBeforeYouShop with Swap Society

Do you ever feel guilty about purchasing a new piece for your closet? Or is budget a deterrent when shopping for sustainably made clothing? I’ve dealt with this many times before, and I’m sure a lot of you would relate to these experiences, as well. That’s why when I first heard about Swap Society, I was immediately drawn to the concept. We’ve all heard {or maybe even participated} of clothing swaps hosted by friends or groups within our communities, but this one is open to everyone and is incredibly easy to join.

Aren't these dresses sweet? They are all from Swap Society - even Elliott's little outfit :D

Three Reasons to Love Swap Society

Minimizes Carbon Footprint:

With the apparel industry being the 4th largest industrial polluter, it's easy to feel ashamed when purchasing a new article of clothing. While it's important to support the brands doing it right, buying second-hand is always a good thing, no matter where it came from.

Saves You Money:

One of the biggest complaints I receive from viewers is the price tags found on most sustainable clothing. Yes, they are more expensive than many of us are used to, and yes, I understand not having the budget for them. That's why it's so great to have communities like Swap Society, where you can purchase from nice brands without the steep price. The fact you can swap items you already own for something else is saving you a ton of money!

Keeps Your Closet Fresh:

Ever heard, "Oh, I can't wear that. I already posted it on Instagram."? I don't know how many of my friends have said this very thing and would run off to Forever 21 to purchase a new dress for the weekend event. {side note: I was guilty of this many years ago, too!} With Swap Society, you can constantly update your wardrobe so you never get bored.

How it Works

Swap Society has two types of monthly memberships - LUXE & BASIC. The site works on a point system. When you send your clothing in, a certain amount of points are awarded to you based on the brand and garment quality. With those points, you can swap it for something of equal value along with a small fee of $3.99 {LUXE} or $4.99 {BASIC}.

The BASIC membership is free, and with it, you receive free shipping on the first shipment sent to Swap Society and 7 bonus points when you join. If you like to refresh your closet regularly, go with the LUXE membership, which is $12-19 monthly. With the LUXE, you receive free shipping both ways, 24 bonus points when you join, and first dibs on new luxury & designer items!

Swap Society accepts women's clothing and jewelry, as well as baby, girls, and boys' clothing & accessories. They even take minor imperfections, so don't throw them out if there is a faint stain or missing button.

The Savvy Baby by Savvy Rest

I’m sure you’ve seen my Esmont Platform Bed and Organic Kapok Pillows on the blog time and time again. Savvy Rest makes such beautiful products, so when I heard they had a crib mattress, I knew it was the perfect fit for Elliott. We spend 1/3 of our lives on mattresses and pillows, and I want to make sure my son is sleeping on something good for his health and development. The amount of chemicals used to create the majority of mattresses on the market today does not make me feel comfortable. I’m constantly checking labels and ensuring I understand exactly what’s in the product. With the Savvy Baby, you can feel confident knowing every material used is safe for your little one.

Made in a GOTS-certified facility, this organic {also GOTS-certified} mattress is made of a single, solid 5" layer of firm natural Dunlop latex in the Savvy Rest organic casing. The true natural latex {Dunlop} uses rubber from USDA organic tree plantations and is processed under the Global Organic Latex Standard. So what that means for us is no toxic memory or polyurethane foam, which you usually find in synthetic latex. Even the wool batting, which acts as a natural flame barrier {no chemical flame retardants used}, is certified organic and helps regulate temperature through airflow. The casing around the mattress is made from unbleached, GOTS-certified organic cotton. Feeling good about all of that, right?!

When I first took the mattress out of the box, I couldn't believe how soft and comfortable it felt. If I could take a nap on it, I would. I thought, 'My baby will be sleeping on total luxury'! It fits perfectly in a standard-sized crib and has worked well with every sheet I have purchased. Eventually, we will move him into a toddler bed {which takes crib-sized mattresses}, and I know this type of quality will withstand the next several years.

A little more about this company:

Savvy Rest is a US-based {Central Virginia} organic brand specializing in mattresses, bedding, furniture, and more. They are B Corp Certified, which means they value community, employees, and the environment within every aspect of their business. They have partnered with American Forests, a conservation organization protecting our forests, and with every purchase made at Savvy Rest, five trees will be planted through their Global ReLeaf program. Also, with their Safe Sleep Pillow program, Savvy Rest reaches out to local domestic violence organizations to donate pillows for women and children who have escaped these situations.

Happy Earth Day! Here’s The Last Shopping Tote You’ll Ever Need

Urbana Sacs

One of the best days of the year, Earth Day, is when everyone can step back and look at their impact as global citizens. It’s a day you can ask yourself, ‘What can I do better?’ or “What can I teach my children?’. Earth Day always stood out to me as a child because our school would get into it and create fun projects centered around eco-mindedness. I didn’t have an ‘earthy’ focus at home {even though we composted, recycled, used minimal water/ac, etc}, so Earth Day was always exciting and an excellent reminder for me to do more than the bare minimum, which I’m sure many other children feel the same way, today.

We didn’t start reusing bags in our family until I was in high school. I spent most of my childhood knee-deep in those petroleum-based grocery bags we thought could be recycled. Our produce always had its clear bag to separate them from one another {I’m still shocked to see how many people use those for items like lemons and oranges, which have unique ‘shells’ to keep them separated from the rest, to begin with :P}. One of the easiest eco-swaps we can do as consumers is to shop with reusable bags. There isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t go to the grocery store or run on an errand where I need a bag to put my new belongings. Also, if you’re a mom, your need for space dramatically increases. Not only can I use this tote for my shopping, but I can throw in Elliott’s things and still have space to add more.

I’ve been carrying this tote with me everywhere {nice to have on hand in your car!}, and it’s rare I don’t get asked “Where did you get this!?’” or “What’s this made from?!”.

So, What is this Bag Made from?

This Carry-All Sac {along with all other Urbana Sacs products} is made from various virgin pulp fiber blends and recycled felt and manufactured through cultivation rather than deforestation. You can shape them like clay and use them time and time again. Plus, every Urbana Sacs product is sustainably crafted in LA. I’ve been using their products for the past couple of years and have loved how easy they are to clean. Their creative sacs are great for organizing, but my favorite is to use them as cute little planters! They make perfect gifts that way, too.
