The Best Non-Toxic & Sustainable Candles

Welcome to the ultimate guide on non-toxic candles, where we shed light on creating a safer and healthier environment in your home. Candles are a popular choice for creating ambiance and filling a space with a delightful fragrance. However, many conventional candles contain harmful ingredients that can release toxins when burned, polluting the air you breathe.

In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the world of non-toxic candles and show you how to make informed choices that prioritize your health and the well-being of your loved ones. From understanding the dangers of certain ingredients to discovering safer alternatives, we'll equip you with the knowledge to transform your candle-lit moments into a toxin-free experience.

Whether you're a candle enthusiast or just starting your journey, this guide will help you confidently navigate the complex world of non-toxic candles. Get ready to light up your home with candles that enhance your space and prioritize your health and wellness!

Understanding the Dangers of Conventional Candles

Conventional candles may seem harmless, but they often contain a cocktail of toxic ingredients that can harm your health. One of the primary concerns is the use of paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum refining, which releases harmful chemicals such as benzene and toluene when burned. These chemicals are known to contribute to indoor air pollution, leading to respiratory problems, allergies, and even more severe health issues.

Additionally, conventional candles are often scented using synthetic fragrances containing potentially hazardous chemicals. Phthalates, for example, are commonly used to enhance fragrance and improve the longevity of the scent, but they have been linked to endocrine disruption and other health problems. When you burn a conventional candle, these synthetic fragrances are released into the air and can be inhaled, posing a risk to your health.

Burning conventional candles can have profound health implications, but there is a solution: non-toxic candles.

What Are Sustainable, Non-Toxic Candles?

Non-toxic candles, also known as natural or organic candles, are made from ingredients that do not release harmful toxins when burned. These candles are typically made from natural waxes, such as soy, beeswax, or coconut wax, free from the toxic chemicals in paraffin wax. They are also scented using natural essential oils or botanical extracts rather than synthetic fragrances.

These candles are better for the air you breathe and the environment, as they are made from renewable resources and produce less soot when burned.

Sustainable candles should be non-toxic and made by people who are paid a fair wage, with eco-friendly ingredients and packaging.

Benefits of Using Sustainable, Non-Toxic Candles

Using non-toxic candles in your home offers a range of benefits beyond just avoiding harmful toxins. Here are some of the key advantages to consider:

  1. Improved Air Quality: Non-toxic candles release fewer pollutants into the air, resulting in cleaner and healthier indoor air quality. This is especially important for individuals with respiratory conditions, allergies, or sensitivities to synthetic fragrances.

  2. Reduced Health Risks: By eliminating harmful chemicals like benzene, toluene, and phthalates, non-toxic candles can help reduce the risk of respiratory problems, allergies, and other health issues associated with burning conventional candles.

  3. Environmental Friendliness: Non-toxic candles are typically made from renewable resources and are biodegradable, making them more eco-friendly than conventional candles that rely on petroleum-based paraffin wax.

  4. Longer Burn Time: Natural waxes, such as soy and beeswax, tend to burn slower than paraffin wax, resulting in longer-lasting candles. This means you can enjoy the warm glow and fragrances for a more extended period without replacing the candle as frequently.

  5. Aromatherapy Benefits: Many non-toxic candles are scented with natural essential oils, providing a delightful fragrance and therapeutic benefits. For example, lavender essential oil can promote relaxation and better sleep, while citrus oils can uplift your mood and increase energy levels.

Why Choose Organic and Natural Fabrics for your bed sheets?

Because we spend 1/3 of our lives in our beds! Why wouldn’t we want to make it a safe, non-toxic zone? When we get a little shut-eye, we shouldn’t have to compromise our health (or the planet’s). You don’t want to sleep on toxic dyes or fibers grown with pesticides. These types of fabrics in this post are highly regulated during the entire process from crop to finish, so you can be sure you are sleeping on a safe product.

What types of fabrics should we look for when shopping for new bed sheets?

From organic cotton to hemp, all of these sheets bring you comfort and a good night’s rest. Their quality is superb, and you can rest easy knowing you aren’t sleeping on chemically infused linens. Organic Cotton, Linen, Hemp, and Tencel are the main fabrics to look for. Linen sheets give a beautiful French aesthetic, while Tencel is the perfect alternative to silk. Hemp is usually blended with organic cotton and can provide a very soft linen appearance and may even feel softer. Organic cotton is the essential go-to and one you can’t go wrong with. A Complete Guide To Sustainable, Non-Toxic Air and Fabric Fresheners

Humans have been trying to mask unpleasant odors in their homes for millennia. Ages ago, people used to change the scent in the air by burning incense or using spices, herbs, and floral extracts.

But the invention of modern-day, conventional air fresheners actually dates back to 1948. It suddenly became very easy to get rid of unwanted smells and freshen up our spaces. We simply needed to spray out a fine mist into the air, and we would enjoy the lingering scent for a few hours.

These days, most households still regularly use air and fabric fresheners around their homes as they are extremely convenient to have. Yes, we can open the windows and let fresh air in, but sometimes, we want to add a nice scent to our rooms and closets.

However, the issue is that almost all air and fabric fresheners we can buy at the store are filled with harmful chemicals and toxins that are incredibly unhealthy and unsustainable. But does that mean we need to stop using air fresheners altogether? No, it doesn’t!

In this article, you will learn more about ten brands that make eco-friendly, non-toxic air and fabric fresheners that you can safely use around your family, children and pets. We also included a DIY recipe for people who prefer making their own products!

WHY YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM CONVENTIONAL AIR & FABRIC FRESHENERS

Since the home fragrance industry is unregulated and there are no safety standards or ingredient transparency requirements, companies selling air and fabric fresheners fill their products with extremely dangerous chemicals. These are known to trigger allergies and asthma and may cause other health problems.

Toxins in Air Fresheners

More specifically, conventional air fresheners usually contain phthalates, which are linked to hormone disruption and male reproductive system birth defects. Synthetic musks are also common in air fresheners, and they are suspected to cause allergies and hormone disruptions.

Air fresheners are also often made with petroleum distillates, which contribute to water, air and soil pollution, and being exposed to them can lead to respiratory issues, chemical pneumonia and pulmonary damage.

If they are in an aerosol can, air fresheners are filled with aerosol propellants: these can harm the ozone layer, and increase the risk of developing cancer and chronic health issues.

These are only a few harmful ingredients contained in air and fabric fresheners. But so many others are problematic for both human health and the environment!

HOW TO CHOOSE A NON-TOXIC, SUSTAINABLE AIR/FABRIC FRESHENER?

When looking for a non-toxic freshener, always check the ingredient list. If you cannot find one, it may be a warning sign that you should not buy the product!

Sustainable, non-toxic air and fabric fresheners are made using natural ingredients like charcoal, plant oils, mineral- and plant-based ingredients. Also, make sure that the product does not contain harmful ingredients like those mentioned previously.

If you are not sure of your choice, always prefer brands that received trustworthy certifications, like B Corporations. And if you can, pick air fresheners that come in recyclable or compostable packaging. Refill options are great as well!

Friendsheep Wool makes its eco fresheners in a variety of designs, from lovely roses to cute little bees and colorful birds. Completely biodegradable, each product is hand-felted by women with disabilities in Nepal, and they are made from organic, Leaping Bunny-certified wool sourced from family-run farms in New Zealand.

Friendsheep Wool is a member of 1% For The Planet. It also plants one tree for every item sold and offsets the carbon emissions from all the shipments throughout its supply chain.

8. Citrus Magic

Type: Air Freshener Sprays, Solid Air Fresheners

Price: pack of 3 for $35

Citrus Magic sells all kinds of natural odor-eliminating products, from sprays to solid air fresheners. It has different scented sprays, but we particularly recommend its USDA-certified organic fresheners.

You can choose between a blend of organic tropical citrus fruits and a blend of citrus fruits, lavender and eucalyptus. Both sprays eliminate odors instead of hiding them and fill the room with a clean, refreshing scent.

If you want an odor-removing solution for the long haul, Citrus Magic also has a variety of long-lasting solid air fresheners. Very practical, they can be hidden in cupboards, under the bed or behind a couch, and they will keep the air fresh for up to eight weeks.

The brand even has versions specially made for cars, as well as small solid air fresheners in the shape of little paws that you can tuck behind a litter box to eliminate pet odors for seven days.

9. Moso Natural

Type: Odor Absorber Bags, Air Freshener Sprays

Price: $9-23

Moso Natural specializes in the production of natural air purifying bags that freshen up the air and absorb odors (instead of just covering them up) wherever you place them.

These bags are incredibly helpful and versatile as they can be used to purify any space. They are made in different shapes and sizes, so you can put them in your basement, closet, car, fridge, and even in your shoes!

Moso Natural’s bags are scent-free and filled with only one natural ingredient, which is completely non-toxic and safe to use around children and pets: pure Moso bamboo charcoal. Not only does this ingredient help eliminate odors, but it also dehumidifies the air and removes harmful chemicals and VOCs.

The bags can be used for up to two years, and after that, you can sprinkle the charcoal in your garden to promote plant growth.

Moso Natural also has a scent-free, air purifying spray. Its active probiotic formula quickly destroys any odor, and it is produced without synthetic chemicals.

10. DIY Air & Fabric Freshener

All the brands mentioned in this article sell non-toxic air and fabric fresheners made with natural ingredients. But if you prefer making your own household products to clean and refresh your home instead of buying ready-made ones, this recipe is for you!

First, find an unused spray bottle in your home: the most sustainable option is to reuse one from a product that you have used up. Of course, do not forget to properly clean it so that there is no residue left.

Put one tablespoon of baking soda into a bowl, & add 10 drops of your favorite essential oil to it.

I personally love making cleaning products with citrus oils, like lemon, orange or grapefruit essential oils. These always smell so good! I have also made DIY products with Ylang Ylang essential oil, which I highly recommend if you want a more exotic, floral scent.

Then, mix the oil into the baking soda with a fork or a small whisk, and use a funnel to put the mixture into the spray bottle. Finally, pour 2 cups of warm distilled water, and shake the bottle.

And there you have your homemade air and fabric freshener! You can use it to refresh the air in your home or spruce up home textiles and clothes that need a boost before washing them.

This recipe is extremely easy and cheap to make, and all the ingredients are non-toxic. Not to mention you can customize the scent and choose a different one every time you make another homemade freshener!

What makes home decor ‘sustainable’?

We look for a couple of things when adding brands to this list. First, what is the product made out of? Ethics play a significant role in sustainability, and we only add brands with high regard for their makers. Many of these brands partner with master artisans to support traditional crafts; a few have ‘Fair Trade’ certifications.

And, of course, always using what you have and shopping secondhand is very sustainable!

What feels better than curling up with a cozy blanket after a long day?? And what makes it even better is knowing your blanket is eco-friendly and sustainably-made. We have quite the collection at our house, so I added some of our favorites!

What makes a blanket ‘sustainable’?

When looking for sustainable blankets, the first thing we look for is the material. Is it made from a natural, eco-friendly fabric? Each of these blankets is made with sustainable fabric, and many are labeled ‘organic,’ meaning they have gone through a stricter farming process than conventional fabrics.
