It’s getting to be that time of year, and we all know how much waste can be associated with the holidays. We can still enjoy the usual festivities in many ways but with a more sustainable approach. One of the most significant waste contributors during this time is wrapping paper. I know it’s easy to run to Target and get a cute, festive bag, but I can almost guarantee you already have something in your home to use. I hope this post helps spark some fun ideas for when you start wrapping gifts!

Reusable Gift Wrap

If you want to make gift wrapping more beautiful than ever, I suggest checking out Wrappr.

This brand has been inspired by the Japanese art of Furoshiki, over 1200 years old.

Their organic cotton gift wraps come in many different prints (& sizes); anyone would be excited to receive a gift!

Since the recipient will use the fabric again, it’s like giving two gifts simultaneously.

Chip Bags

I love shiny wrapping paper!

As a kid, I used to sell holiday wrapping paper to get prizes, and I always wanted my parents to buy holographic ones.

Unfortunately, I've missed the shiny stuff because I don't tend to buy wrapping paper rolls.

I've read a few articles that mentioned saving your chip bags, and I thought that was a brilliant idea. Just cut them open, wash them, and voila - you have beautiful, shiny paper to use!

Scrap Paper with Artwork

We keep shipping paper and any scrap paper that comes our way.

Plus, with having a toddler, it’s nice to have a lot of it on hand. Elliott loves scribbling everywhere, so we had him decorate some paper for us this year.

My husband got in on the action and gave us this lovely rose.

Suggest doing this as a family thing - it makes it more fun!

The Funnies

I’m sure this isn’t new to any of you - if you are like my family, you have been using newspaper as wrapping paper for many years.

Regular newspapers can be boring, but hold on to the funnies to make something more unique.

We don’t receive the newspaper anymore, but my grandparents do & I ask them to keep the funnies aside for me.

Reusable Food Wraps

If you are gifting some homemade bread or flowers, opt for reusable food wraps instead of paper or plastic. That way, the receiver can use it again in their kitchen.

Old Maps

Another reason to rummage through your parent’s and grandparent’s place...

I am sure these are just taking up space & would make for excellent wrapping paper.

& Save Everything!

My biggest tip would be to save whatever you get throughout the year. It’s OK to use birthday paper for Christmas :D & old boxes and packing paper. All the ribbons, Christmas tree cut-offs & random yarns - keep them all. It’s also fun to decorate packages with old buttons and bells. Get creative with it <3
