The Next Big Thing in Protein is Little

LifestyleNatalie Kay

Struggling with protein intake? I think I've found your solution. Did you know that protein bar above is full of nutrional goodness from crickets?! Yes - Crickets!! That initial 'ick' factor most of us have in the Western world when it comes to eating insects is being seriously rethought after trying one of these protein bars. Let me just say, before anything else, they are delicious!! As someone who has a very small appetite & eats primarily plants, I know most days I am not consuming the correct amount of protein. I'm sure, like me, a lot of you are very busy bodies, and aren't able to keep track of your daily intake of those necessary nutrients. This is where a quick pick-me-up in snack form comes in handy. Find these yummy bars in Coast's current Kickstarter project. They come in two flavors, Peanut Butter & Dark Chocolate Raisin. If you are a fan of peanut butter or chocolate, I know you are going to love them!!

So why cricket protein? It's highly nutritious and even comes with a good amount of calcium, zinc, iron {2.2x more iron than spinach}, magnesium, Omega-3 and Omega-6. It's a complete protein which means it comes with 9 essential amino acids needed for muscle growth and repair. They require less water since most of their hydration comes from the food they eat. A family of 4 eating insect protein 1 day a week for 1 year saves the earth 650,000 liters of fresh water!! &&& they produce less emissions. For example, crickets emit 100x less greenhouse gases per pound than a dairy cow. So yeah.. why wasn't I eating them before!? :P

After finding out about the benefits of eating insects, I did a lot of reading up on how normalizing cricket protein for the future could truly make a positive difference. I'm never here to tell people how to eat {sustainability is subjective, and it's all about balance & mindfulness}, but if meat is your main source of protein, I highly recommend switching a few meals to plants with a side of cricket powder in your drink ;)

& yes.. I said powder. Besides the protein bars, Coast's Kickstarter is also offering cricket protein in powder form! This means you can add this nutritional magic to any of your morning smoothies or post-workout drinks.
