I often find it difficult to resist purchasing new items for the children in my family, and it seems like many others feel the same way, hence the numerous presents that we receive for our little one named Elliott. Although I haven't created a registry, if I did, I would have included a lot of items from Made Trade. You can make someone's nursery extra special with ethical gifts that support sustainable livelihoods, ranging from cozy slippers to beautiful laundry baskets.  Keep reading to discover some of my favorite gifts for babies...

Chilote Baby Slippers

I've been using a pair of these slippers for years, and I absolutely love them. They are incredibly cozy, and the mini-me version is simply adorable. What's more, they are Fair Trade certified and are handmade by women artisans in Patagonia using locally sourced materials. Even the sole is made from upcycled salmon leather obtained from the local fishing industry. And the best part? The more you wear them, the more comfortable they get! I can vouch for that.

Seek and Swoon Baby Orca Throw

You can never have enough blankets," they say. I completely agree, especially when it comes to Elliott's nursery - his blanket collection is one of my favourites. The classic black and white style of this particular blanket is just perfect. My grandmother used to say that she would have never chosen black for a nursery or clothing, but now she sees it quite often and loves it! What's even better is that this blanket is made right here in the US from 75% recycled cotton. If you want some color, check out the Diana Throw or the Adventure Throw.

Swahili African Modern Black and White Basket

This basket is handwoven from cattail stalks and upcycled plastic, and it has been a wonderful addition to Elliott's nursery. We primarily use it as a laundry basket, but it can serve many different purposes. I often find toys thrown into it, so it also makes a great toy basket. The basket is incredibly sturdy, and it provides income for rural women in Senegal within their own community. The plastic strips used to make the basket are salvaged from a local mat factory, which is quite surprising.

KAZI Wall Decor

I know this is a photo of a dining room next to me, but I had an idea. How about using that same setup over a crib? Made Trade offers a variety of small wall plates, with prices starting at around $22. It would be a great opportunity to showcase your creativity. Plus, after you're done using it in the nursery, you can use it as a trivet on your kitchen table since it's heat-resistant. Every wall plate is made in Uganda from raffia and sweetgrass natural fibers, using organic dyes. KAZI is a member of the Fair Trade Federation.
