therapy threads

Remember the beautiful Poppy Floral scarf I wore throughout the sweet little cities of France last year? Well Therapy Threads has come out with another lovely line of basic organic scarves and jewelry, too! Just to refresh our memories, aromatherapy is the practice of using natural oils to better your health. Therapy Threads is taking this practice and combining it with accessories, like scarves and bracelets, so you are able to experience a sense of calming throughout your busy day.

What I Love About Therapy Threads

Promotes Self-Care & Mental Wellness: These two things can easily slip by us when we are constantly on the go or juggle multiple tasks. We become so caught up in life and bad habits that self-care can sometimes be put on the back burner. We have to incorporate it into our daily lives. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my own mental wellness when I put forth effort into self-care. Especially for those who are in the process of healing or going through big life changes, aromatherapy can bring much comfort. Dani Singer, the creator, feels we can offer an obtainable, natural alternative to support healing by bringing fashion and aromatherapy together. I've noticed within my life and dealing with a high-risk pregnancy I've really had to take a step back and focus on my own well being. It's definitely been one of the most vulnerable times in my life, and having 'natural' ways of dealing with stress and change have been very important to me.

Organic Cotton: The coral scarf I’m wearing here is made with 100% organic cotton, and is an ideal weight for this time of year. It’s very soft and an awesome travel buddy, as well. It’s impossible to escape the blazing AC in Florida, so I’m one of those with a scarf allows in tow! Plus, the color palette they chose is full of great neutrals for any wardrobe.

Essential Oils: You can choose from over 15 different essential oils to use on the aroma pads and bracelets. Their scents linger throughout the day, and there is something for everyone.

Giving Back: Dani has several years of experience with treating families, couples & PTSD patients, and is a survivor of sexual abuse, bullying and domestic violence. Therapy Threads, represents two things: 1) Dani's passion in providing mental health therapy & 2) The several threads that come together to make healing and wellness possible. With 1 in 5 adults suffering from mental illness in the U.S. the discussion is not loud enough! 10% of proceeds are donated to the National Alliance on Mental Illness. You can even join the Self Care Club Dani has put together!

What I’m Wearing

Coral Organic Aromatherapy Diffuser Scarf: Made from 100% organic cotton, this scarf has a little pouch on the inside to secure your aroma pad. It's a gorgeous color, and like I mentioned before, very soft and great to have on hand everyday!

Essential Oil+Aroma-Diffuser Bracelet Bundle: This wonderful meditation bundle combines the healing properties of both aromatherapy and quartz crystal stones. These stones help clear your mind of negative energy - enhance personal growth - provide spiritual healing - may improve circulation, immune system, and metabolism with enhanced energy flow and improved balance - and alleviates exhaustion and offers increased energy levels! I love how they are paired with the wood beads, too.

Lemongrass Essential Oil: Not sure anything can smell more fresh for this time of year! It also is known to ward off insects which fits right in for the Florida summers :D

Aroma Pads: These are the little guys you can easily insert into the pouch on in the scarf. They are reusable and you can layer the oils on day-to-day OR you can always keep them separate if you prefer not to mix!

Bringing Color & Traditional Craftsmanship to Ethical Fashion with Hand Made Bags from Rural Thailand

Fashion, Fashion Pt. 4Natalie Kay

Samui Bags

Something I've noticed during my 7 years of exploring conscious fashion is a lack of several colors mixed with patterns. You typically have very subdued palettes with a consistent pattern which flows along nicely with the minimalistic lifestyle. While I'm a lover of earth tones, and this more 'simple' aesthetic in my own wardrobe, I've always enjoyed having my accessories do the talking for me. It's fun to have a few pieces that bring a smile to your face because of all the color! Samui Bags is one of those brands that can easily brighten up the room {or your local beach/pool}.

Why I Love Samui Bags

1. Supporting Artisan Entrepreneurs. Samui Bag’s overall mission is to support entrepreneurs in rural Thailand through the purchasing and selling of handmade, certified fair trade goods. You know one of my first loves in sustainable fashion are goods that support the makers and their crafts. Since the Thai government outlawed slash and burn farming {because of environmental and public health issues}, many villagers who once relied on this type of work are now shifting their focus back to their handmade products.

2. Fair Trade Manufacturing. They employ artisans who use traditional weaving techniques for ceremonial clothing, which brings more authentic goods to the market {lucky us!}.  All artisans work under ethical conditions and earn fair wages. The bags are produced in the beautiful island of Koh Samui - one of the biggest islands in the country full of love and community-oriented residents. The island is a symbol of Togetherness, Equality, Kindness, Adventure, Exploration and Beauty - what Samui is all about!

3. Colors, Patterns & Great Quality. Like I said before, I love when my bags mix color and patterns, especially when I head out to my own little slice of paradise here in Florida. What I think is really important to note is their combination of affordability and quality. One of the biggest deterrents in the sustainable fashion industry is price. I’m incredibly happy when a brand is accessible to a wider range of economic backgrounds while still being well made!

What I'm Using

Ocean Breeze Weekender Bag : I don't think a product can get more practical for someone who almost lives their life at the beach. I spend quite a good amount of time at my grandparent's place which is literally a few steps from the ocean. I always pack a bag for the day, and this particular weekender is now my official go-to. I mean, look at how much space I have in this thing! There is even a pocket on the inside to separate the smaller items you pack {& you can throw in a little pouch, of course!}.

Ocean Breeze Pouch: The sister of the weekender bag, it's nice to have a little something extra to help keep you more organized! Items like your sun block, phone, lip gloss... you know.. those essentials.. fit perfectly into this little pouch. I've been using it as a makeup bag in other totes, as well.

A Brand Fighting to End Poverty Through the Empowerment of Women

Fashion, Fashion Pt. 4Natalie Kay

I've said this time and time again, the only way to break the chain of poverty is through empowerment. While charity may seem positive and makes you feel great when donating, it continues the cycle over & over & over - making it impossible for those living in poor conditions to rise above {I suggest watching Poverty Inc. to learn a little more on this topic in a fast and engaging way!}.

Job creation can help empower, and My Fight is here to focus on the women artisans! They want to change the reputation of high poverty rate into artisan skill. They want the countries they work with to be known for their talents rather a lack of money. The women My Fight partners with are visionaries wanting to go against the norm and make real change for their communities and families.

I love when a brand can create sustainable jobs while using materials found in their own surroundings. The artisans from My Fight use brass bullet casings leftover from former war conflicts. They collect them from the fields, melt them down and forge into beads. The selected beads are coated with silver & copper and used to create the beautiful jewelry you find on their site! {p.s. they also make beautiful leather bags and few pieces of clothing, too!}

What's so great about My Fight is the affordability. They even have a list of all their products under $50. Since I am constantly getting the question of 'what brands make affordable fair fashion?' I'm glad to add another on to that list for ya!

What I'm Wearing

Selene Collar Necklace: Okay, I am absolutely obsessed with this necklace right now. Even wore it to take my new Driver License photo! Contrary to its look, the Selene Collar is extremely lightweight and made from hollow brass. It's embossed with this gorgeous Art Nouveau Design, and even has a matching cuff & earrings

Double Coin Silver Choker: This is one of the necklaces I was speaking about using the brass bullet casings. While the coins are usually worn in the front, for some reason I love wearing it backwards if I have a low top on. You'd agree it looks pretty great, right?

From Flock to Fashion | Sustainable Merino Scarves

Fashion, Fashion Pt. 4Natalie Kay

You've heard of farm to table, but farm to closet is what Sustainably Chic is always after. Transparency from the very very beginning is key to building a sustainable wardrobe. We want to know who's behind the clothing we wear everyday. LoveMerino is giving us that honest, slow fashion approach us conscious ladies are looking for. This responsible fashion brand uses the finest Merino wool which comes directly from their own farm in Wellington, NSW, Australia. Glenwood farm has been in their family since 1898 - that's five generations of farmers {click here to meet the Smiths}! They believe in a holistic system of sustainable land management which {of course} includes the ethical treatment of their animals. By having total control over production and materials used, LoveMerino is able to offer us a quality garment we can appreciate for many years while keeping their carbon footprint low.

In today's fashion industry, it's quite difficult to find the brands who truly embody the concept of sustainability. I feel as if I am always trying to explain the definition while leaving room for subjectivity. This concept is one which should be applied to everything in your life, and the main goal is to be conscious about future generations. It's interesting to watch a family of farmers uphold this concept because their future generations within the business are so personal. The Smith's say, "Glenwood is not just a farming business but a way of life - we aim to achieve a harmonious balance between the landscape, animals, business and our family." & this hits sustainability right on the spot! What is so wonderful about working with merino sheep is the regeneration of land. Glenwood has seen the re-emergence of several native grasses which were thought to be extinct. These sheep are able to mimic nature allowing the environment to thrive. This is a perfect example of how fashion and animals can coexist in harmony.

So what makes this merino wool special {besides the obvious sustainable farming}?

After a few decades of research and development, Glenwood has created one of the most exceptional merino wools on the market. This particular fiber is non-itchy {yeah, I'm serious!} and very soft. It takes dye easy, and it's what they call an 'active' fiber meaning it works with your body temperature keeping you cool or warm depending on the season. Pretty amazing, right?! And because I hate ironing, I love that it has a natural resistance to wrinkles. Overall, this fiber is something amazing and creates such elegant scarves!!

I'm wearing the Glenwood Summer Scarf in Plum/Natural. LoveMerino works with limited edition designers to create these beautiful prints and colors. The Glenwood Scarf is made in collaboration with Manuela Strano, an up-and-coming Australian designer. She is a graphic designer, and works in many different artistic fields including branding, packaging, letterpress and watercolors. I was instantly drawn to her botanical design that features roses and vines found at the homestead garden at Glenwood Farm. This scarf is extremely soft, and easy to pair with your existing wardrobe. Plus, it comes in several different colors - the sky blue is gorgeous!!

Because the site is full of beauties, I thought I'd share some more of my favorites below:

Moonphase Scarf | Dip Dyed Scarf | Paper Daisy Scarf

Teen Empowerment through Jobs, Spirituality & Professional Development

Fashion, Fashion Pt. 4Natalie Kay

HandUp Global Goods

My blog has concentrated so much on women, I feel as if it has been lacking with issues dealing primarily with men. That's why I'm very excited to share this non-profit enterprise with you! HandUp Global Goods is working with Haitian teen boys who are transitioning out of orphanages and into adulthood. By giving them the necessary tools such as jobs, spiritual development, financial literacy, and vocational training, HUGG hopes to encourage these young men to become responsible workers, family members, and community leaders. In order to empower someone, we must get rid of hand outs which act as a bandaid and never lead to sustainable progression. Instead, HUGG believes in hand UPs, and I couldn't agree more! Transforming the individual is a great way to build strong families and communities. And like Hugg says - "the results extend beyond the individual men".

So how can we help in this mission?

Well, it's easy - We can support artisan jobs through the beautiful jewelry I'm wearing! Each piece is made by one of these teens, and helps pay them a fair wage while learning about finance, business and their own spirituality. You know how much I love having a deeper connection with fashion, and knowing who makes what I wear is very important to me. Each hangtag has a photo of the artisan and a little write up about their journey with HUGG. You can meet all the artisans - here - and learn what they did before HUGG, what they've learned through work and their future goals. What Joseph Samuel {one of the teens} says will put a huge smile on your face, "Now that I am working at HandUp, I have a reason to get up". This just goes to show how great our impact is as consumers, and how easy it is to support opportunity for others.

I'm wearing the Akolad Triple Wrap in Teal and Brass complete with a globe charm {that's my favorite part!} - you can choose from 7 different cord colors and three different bead types. I paired it with the Katelyn bracelet which is made from clay & bronze beads and clear recycled glass. You know I'm a sucker for recycled anything, and they make it look beautiful!

Below are a few more of my favorite bracelets - Just click the link below to start shopping ;)

The Ombre Pendant Necklace has all my favorite blues and greens, and is made from knotted waxed cord. It pairs perfectly with light blues and is a great way to dress up your basic tees. HUGG has a gorgeous collection of necklaces as you can see below...
