The Savvy Baby by Savvy Rest

{find a discount code at the end of the post - good through 7/1}

I’m sure you’ve seen my Esmont Platform Bed and Organic Kapok Pillows on the blog time and time again. Savvy Rest makes such wonderful products so when I heard they had a crib mattress, I knew it was the perfect fit for Elliott. We spend 1/3 of our lives on our mattress and pillows, and I want to make sure my son is sleeping on something good for his health and development. The amount of chemicals used to create the majority of mattresses on the market, today, does not make me feel comfortable. I’m constantly checking labels and making sure I understand exactly what’s in the product. With the Savvy Baby, you can feel confident knowing every material used is safe for your little one.

Made in a GOTS-certified facility, this organic {also GOTS-certified} mattress is made of a single, solid 5" layer of firm natural Dunlop latex in the Savvy Rest organic casing. The true natural latex {Dunlop} uses rubber from USDA organic tree plantations and is processed under the Global Organic Latex Standard. So what that means for us is no toxic memory or polyurethane foam which you usually find in synthetic latex. Even the wool batting, which acts as a natural flame barrier {no chemical flame retardants used}, is certified organic and helps regulate temperature through airflow. The casing around the mattress is made from unbleached, GOTS-certified organic cotton. Feeling good about all of that, right?!

When I first took the mattress out of the box, I couldn’t believe how soft and comfortable it felt. If I could take a nap on it, I would. I thought, ‘my baby is going to be sleeping on total luxury’! It fit perfectly in a standard sized crib, and has worked well with every sheet I have purchased. Eventually we will move him into a toddler bed {which takes crib sized mattresses}, and I know this type of quality will be able to withstand the next several years.

A little more about this company:
Savvy Rest is a US based {Central Virginia} organic brand specializing in mattresses, bedding, furniture and more. They are B Corp Certified, which means they value community, employees and environment within every aspect of their business. They have partnered with American Forests, a conservation organization protecting our forests, and with every purchase made at Savvy Rest, 5 trees will be planted through their Global ReLeaf program. Also, with their Safe Sleep Pillow program, Savvy Rest reaches out to local domestic violence organizations to donate pillows for women and children who have escaped these situations.

we love eyes

Recently, I saw this great meme that touched on men’s and women’s beauty products. It basically said men could you use the same soap for everything, while women had a specific soap just for their elbow. I thought, ‘omg this is so true!’. Beauty brands spend much more time on formulating products for different parts of the woman’s body, but when it comes to men, they are given only a couple of options. The area around your eyes is extremely sensitive so the usual shower gels they use are not great for the face. I’m happy to see brands like We Love Eyes include the guys!

What’s New at We Love Eyes

Tea Tree Eyelid Foaming Cleanser for Men: Much like the Foaming Cleanser for women, this refreshing daily eyelid wash helps invigorate dry and tired eyes. As always, it is vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free, paraben-free and sulfate-free! Travis has a good amount of screen time in his life, and his eyes seem more sensitive than mine. This has been a great addition to his very small ‘beauty routine’. & he loves the scent, so that makes it even better!

Where to Purchase

You can shop We Love Eyes’ entire collection - here - and don’t forget to stay up-to-date with new product launches via Instagram

Happy Earth Day! Here’s The Last Shopping Tote You’ll Ever Need

Brand Features, FashionNatalie Kay
reusable bags

Urbana Sacs

One of the best days of the year, Earth Day is when everyone can take a step back and look at their impact as a global citizen. It’s a day you can ask yourself, ‘What can I do better?’ or “What can I teach my children?’. Earth Day always stood out to me as a child because our school would get very into it and create fun projects centered around eco-mindedness. I didn’t really have an ‘earthy’ focus at home {even though we composted, recycled, used minimal water/ac, etc} so Earth Day was always exciting and a great reminder for me to do more than the bare minimum, which I’m sure many other children feel the same way, today.

We didn’t start reusing bags in our family until I was in high school. I spent most of my childhood knee deep in those petroleum based grocery bags we thought could be recycled. Our produce always had its individual clear bag to separate them from one another {which I’m still shocked to see how many people use those for items like lemons and oranges who have amazing ‘shells’ to keep them separated from the rest to begin with :P}. I believe one of the easiest eco swaps we can do as consumers is shop with reusable bags. There really isn’t a day that goes by where I don’t go to the grocery store or run on any errand where I need a bag to put my new belongings.   Also, if you’re a mom, your need for space greatly increases. Not only can I use this tote for my shopping, but I can throw in Elliott’s things and still have space to add more.

I’ve been carrying this tote with me everywhere {nice to have on hand in your car!}, and it’s rare I don’t get asked “Where did you get this!?’” or “What’s this made from?!”.

So What is this Bag Made from?

This Carry-All Sac {along with all other Urbana Sacs product} is made from a variety of virgin pulp fiber blends and recycled felt, and manufactured through cultivation rather deforestation. You are able to shape them like clay, and use them time and time again. Plus, every Urbana Sacs product is sustainably-crafted in LA. I’ve been using their products for the past couple of years, and have loved how easy they are to clean. Their creative sacs are great for organizing, but my favorite is to use them as cute little planters! They make perfect gifts that way, too.

Where to Purchase

You can find their entire collection online - here - and in celebration of Earth Day, they are offering 40% off your entire purchase with code EARTHDAY40. You can use it from Sunday, April 22nd at noon PST to Monday, April 23rd at noon PST! Great time to stock up on some creative sacs and totes for your shopping.

Happy Earth Day!!

Everyday, Ethical Jewelry for the Minimalist and Conscious Woman

ethical jewelry

Devi Arts Collective

Every once in a while I like to wear a statement piece, but for the most part, I like my jewelry neutral, dainty and simple. I almost want to feel as if I’m not wearing any because my first instinct is to take it off. I don’t find comfort in having fingers full of big chunky rings or necklaces getting caught on everything I pass by. I feel like Bayoush Mengesha, the designer of the jewelry from Devi Arts Collective, knows exactly what I want. She takes it even a step further and makes sure the jewelry, along with the other items in the shop, are empowering others and supporting sustainable livelihoods, too!

Why I Love Devi Arts Collective

Aesthetic: This one might be very obvious, but the aesthetic of this jewelry collection is lovely. It really is meant to be worn everyday with anything you have in your closet. The simplicity is what your capsule wardrobe is calling for! When designing, Bayoush is inspired by her Ethiopian heritage where she has learned beauty dances between the simple and the complex. She is also inspired by the natural world, and uses texturing and manipulation techniques to mimic nature. You can easily see this portrayed in some of the materials she chooses like birch bark and feathers.

Sustainable Sourcing: What’s super interesting about this jewelry collection is the choice in materials. Bayoush personally sources all the stones from artisans in India and the silver & gold from a responsible jeweler company. The gemstones come from a 3rd generation lapidary family who have been cutting, shaping and polishing gems in Rajasthan for years. The recycled sterling silver and 14k gold-filled wire come from a company who takes scrap pieces from artisans and creates new materials for designers like Bayoush to use.

Empowering the Maker {& supplier!}: I’ve always loved supporting small independent designers. There really is so much love {blood, sweat and tears, too!} that goes into creating an accessory or piece of jewelry for someone to wear. It’s wonderful knowing exactly where your jewelry was made, and for all of these little lovelies, they were made in Bayoush’s studio in Vancouver. If you are a British Columbian resident, this a wonderful brand for you to support - #shoplocal! Besides the beautiful jewelry line, Devi Arts Collective also has a range of hand woven and organic hand dyed wristlets made by a small weaving community in Guatemala.

What I’m Wearing

Orbit Ring in 14kt Gold: Handmade by Devi Arts Collective designer Bayoush in Vancouver with recycled 14kt gold-filled wire. Works well as a stacking ring {especially with the Flat Ball Silver Stacking Ring I have paired with it} or beautiful by itself!

Cleopatra Necklace: Also handmade by Bayoush with recycled sterling silver and Iolite stone forged, cut, shaped and polished by lapidaries in India. You can also choose from moonstone, labradorite, emerald and ruby for gemstones.

Where to Purchase

You can find the entire collection in their online shop - here - as well as in this list of stockists in British Columbia.

p.s. we are hosting a giveaway over on my Instagram from 4/19-4/22 so make sure to enter!!

IKEA is Weaving a Way to a Better Future

Brand Features, LifestyleNatalie Kay
sustainable rug

I can’t say enough how impressed I am with Ikea’s sustainable initiatives. Like I mentioned in my last post with the ODGER chairs, it is so important for big brands like IKEA to lead the way in creating more eco and ethical products. Sustainability within consumerism needs to be accessible to the masses in order for real change to occur. It also has to be within a price range affordable to the majority. When I first started looking at rugs for our new place, I couldn’t believe the prices. I understand there is a ton of work and tradition behind the textiles, but it was completely out of our budget, as I’m sure it is for most other people, as well. Travis and I went into the process knowing we would like to spend under $500. We found out either we get a product we can’t trace back to the maker or the quality was too dull.

Jacksonville had recently opened up their first ever IKEA, which many were very excited about. After the initial excitement wore down {I don’t do crowds}, I went to have a look with my family. I was so happy to come across the rug selection, which was full of rugs made from cut offs and then they have several made by women’s cooperatives. I’ve always been an advocate for fair trade, and learning more about how they have incorporated social entrepreneurs and weavers really gets me pumped on the future of ethically-made, affordable products.

How  gorgeous is this rug?! The colors and patterns are so vibrant! Plus, it’s easy to vacuum with its flat surface. I feel like you wouldn’t believe me that it’s $200 so click - here - to check it out for yourself!! We’ve been looking for the perfect rug for our living room for quite some time. Going back to what I said in the beginning, price was a huge deterrent in biting the bullet. We couldn’t find the right rug at the right price. IKEA solved this issue, and I’m sure many of you will be just as thankful! Even though they use natural materials and provide fair wages in good working conditions, the prices are totally reasonable. This is the accessibility I’ve been talking about! More people are going to be able to afford and find this in their own backyard, which will only lead to more responsible products being produced in the future.

another exciting collection available at select IKEAs:

The  INNEHÅLLSRIK Collection

With few work opportunities for village women in India, it’s so important for big companies like IKEA to step in and empower these women in order to create stronger communities and sustainable livelihoods. India is known for their weaving skills and beautifully woven patterns. Unfortunately, most rugs you see today are being done on machines in order to produce quicker and cheaper. Because of this, many weavers are losing their jobs. With the help of IKEA, this traditional craftsmanship can be restored. For this particular collection, IKEA partnered up with two Indian social enterprises, Rangsutra and Industree, to showcase traditional hand weaving and embroidery with natural materials. Rangsutra employs over 3000 artisans with 70% being women. Industree, who uses unique natural materials like banana fibers, supports about 600 artisans. *note: the KATTRUP rug pictured in this post is not from this particular collection & can be found at many IKEAs nationwide*
