Zerowaste to the Bone

Charlie Bax

Probably one of the most bizarre, but coolest upcycling ventures I have ever seen, Charlie Bax uses raw femur and discarded bones to create extremely unique home ware. Named after the creator Heather Crowe's sweet little pup, this artisan based company is totally waste-less. With the marrow found in the femur bones, Heather uses it to bake some tasty doggie treats which are donated to Soledad Goat Sanctuary. This sanctuary {also an artisanal vegan cheese warehouse} is home to hundreds of rescued animals, and Henrietta - Charlie Bax's own sponsored hen. Charlie Bax sources their bones from Jim's Fallbrook Market in Woodland Hills, CA, as well as discarded bones from farm to table restaurants in LA & Chicago. My Tiny Bone Candle {pictured above} is definitely a conversation piece. "is that real?" - is usually how it starts. This candle is filled with 100% soy wax, and scented with infused essential oils. I highly recommend trying the Under the Sea scent which is infused with lemongrass, patchouli and lime essential oils - quite refreshing! The next one on my list to try is the Femme Fatale - gotta love a candle you can use in place of a bouquet.

I can't wait to create a Fall/Halloween scene at my house this year. Some great inspiration in these photos! By the way, once your candle runs out the bone makes for an awesome plant holder. You'll be seeing a succulent in mine, for sure.

For a little fancier of a center piece, the Patina "Under the Sea" Collection is absolutely beautiful, and a collaboration with Milwaukee based artist Britt Musial. Not feeling the bone? Charlie Bax has a collection of Copper Candles which are handmade and welded together by Heather. Their Bone Engrave candles are hauntingly fun, and make the best accent for Halloween {or those who enjoy skulls and skeletons all year long - ;) I live with one of those guys}.

p.s. I wanted to end this on a funny bone { i mean note } for you other French speakers out there. My dad said, Charlie Bax is a bonne idée :P Oh dads...
